John Oliver on what’s wrong with retirement planning
– moneysense.ca

In his latest episode of Last Week Tonight, host John Oliver waded through all the confusing, infuriating intricacies of the financial advisor industry in the U.S. While firms like to paint their advisors as cuddly caretakers of your riches, Oliver pointed out all the reasons you should question their motivations.

And more often than not they’re paid with commissions. In Canada, you can look for professionals designated as Certified Financial Planners (CFP), Personal Financial Planners (PFP) and Registered Financial Planners (RFP) to ensure they’re qualified financial planners and do your due diligence when choosing one.
In the U.S., only a fiduciary, Oliver explains, has a client’s best interests in mind, which is why some have been found to hawk complicated, high-fee products to innocent investors…
US appeals court skeptical of House claims in stock case
– canadianbusiness.com
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Federal appeals court judges expressed skepticism Monday toward efforts by a powerful committee of the U.S. House of Representatives to shield itself from a regulator’s insider trading probe.
The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments but did not rule on the House Ways and Means Committee’s appeal. A lower-court judge had determined that the committee must produce documents for an investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Two judges on a three-judge panel expressed doubts about a lawyer’s claims that the committee and one of its former employees are protected by sovereign immunity.
The SEC is investigating whether secrets were improperly released surrounding an April 2013 announcement by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services about a Medicare program.
Circuit Judge Richard Wesley questioned why the SEC would not be entitled to investigate whether phone calls made by a Ways and Means staff member led to a leap in the value of Louisville, Kentucky-based health care company Humana Inc…
