Selling your house? Here’s where to invest the proceeds
– moneysense.ca
Q: My wife and I recently sold our house here in the Vancouver area and are trying condo living by renting.
We are both in our mid to late 50s with no debt. We have approximately $500k in RSPs and TFSAs combined and those are invested in Tangerine balanced funds.
My question is how to invest the $1.2 million we received from the sale of our house?
I am leaning towards a robo-advisor type of investment.
—David
A: I think one of the first things to consider, David, is if you think that you and your wife may be home owners again, whether you ultimately like the condo thing or not. If there’s a chance you may need some or all of the $1.2 million to buy a condo or a house, I would be inclined to keep whatever housing budget you could need aside. Keep this in cash for the next 6-12 months until you make a decision.
Your existing Tangerine solution is a pretty good one compared to most mutual fund investment options. Fees are almost half the going rate at 1.07%, with other balanced funds generally in the 2% range…

How accounting tricks distort companies’ true values.Tesla dangles $2.8B to bring SolarCity into its orbit
– canadianbusiness.com
SAN FRANCISCO – Electric car maker Tesla Motors wants to buy solar panel maker SolarCity for up to $2.8 billion in an attempt to create a one-stop shop for cleaner energy as consumers become more concerned about fossil fuels harming the environment.
The all-stock bid announced Tuesday values SolarCity Corp. at $26.50 to $28.50 per share, depending on a review of the company’s books.
SolarCity’s stock surged $3.31, or 16 per cent, to $24.50 in after-hours trading following the announcement of the deal.
Tesla’s shares sank $24.86, or 11 per cent, to $194.75, signalling that many investors don’t like the idea of the company relinquishing 8 to 9 per cent of its current market value of $32 billion to expand into the solar energy industry.
Both of the companies, located about 17 miles apart in Silicon Valley, are burning through cash as they try to expand in still relatively small markets. Tesla has lost $1.2 billion in the past two years alone while SolarCity has suffered losses exceeding $1…
