Chinese official warns of grim global economic outlook
– canadianbusiness.com
SHANGHAI – China’s commerce minister said Saturday the outlook for the global economy remains grim despite its gradual recovery from the impact of the financial crisis.
Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng’s comments underscored growing concerns about the global economy, which have deepened since the U.K. voted to leave the European Union, raising fears of a global recession.
“In the past few years through our shared hard work, the global economy emerged from its previous low and is developing in a good direction,” Gao said. But at the same time, “the deep effects of the global financial crisis can still be felt.”
Gao did not mention Brexit in his opening remarks at a meeting of trade ministers in Shanghai on Saturday held in the run-up to China’s hosting of the G20 summit later this year. He said governments should work together to find ways to revitalize growth.
“The revival and growth of the global economy is still lacking in strength,” Gao said…

Uruguay wins dispute with tobacco giant Philip Morris
– canadianbusiness.com
MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay – Tobacco giant Philip Morris has lost an international dispute surrounding the sale of cigarettes in Uruguay and must continue to cover packs sold in the South American country with graphic warning labels and restrict its branding practices, President Tabare Vazquez announced Friday.
In a televised address, Vazquez said the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes rejected a challenge by Philip Morris to his government’s strict anti-smoking policies, calling it a victory for efforts to protect public health and his country’s national sovereignty.
“The health measures that we have imposed to control tobacco and protect the health of our people have been recognized as legitimate and adopted as a sovereign function of our republic,” said Vazquez, an oncologist who had spearheaded the anti-smoking campaign.

US Treasury secretary headed to Europe for finance talks
– canadianbusiness.com
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Treasury Department says Secretary Jacob Lew will meet with officials in London, Paris, Berlin and Brussels next week to discuss ways to promote “economic stability and shared economic growth” in the wake of the vote in Britain to leave the European Union.
Treasury said that Lew would meet with finance ministers as well as business leaders and financial market participants in each of the cities he visits starting on Monday.
President Barack Obama had urged British voters to reject a move to leave the EU but after the June 23 vote, administration officials have stressed that they will work with both the EU and Britain with a goal of keeping the exit move from derailing global economic growth.
