Fintech firms try to appeal to millennials’ sense of social responsibility
– canadianbusiness.com
TORONTO – Several startups in the financial technology sector have unveiled products or services in recent months that attempt to court millennials by appealing to their sense of social responsibility.
Online investment adviser WealthSimple launched a socially responsible portfolio about three months ago, and since then roughly 10 per cent of the robo-adviser’s clients have signed up for that option, says founder and CEO Michael Katchen.
“It’s been hugely popular,” says Katchen. “Our clients love it.”
Socially responsible investing, or ethical investing, is the marriage of personal ethics with finance, and it’s been growing in popularity in recent years, a trend believed to be fuelled partly by the values of millennial investors.

Canadians losing confidence in ability to meet financial goals: CIBC poll
– canadianbusiness.com
TORONTO – A new poll from CIBC suggests that some millennials and Generation Xers are losing confidence in their ability to meet their financial goals over the next year.
CIBC says 73 per cent of the Canadians it polled say they are confident they will meet their financial goals over the next 12 months — down from 80 per cent in December when the bank conducted a similar poll.
The survey, which was conducted by Angus Reid, polled 1,489 Canadians online between June 9 and 10.
The polling industry’s professional body, the Marketing Research and Intelligence Association, says online surveys cannot be assigned a margin of error because they do not randomly sample the population.
Millennials, which the survey defines as those between 18 and 34 years old, were the most confident about their ability to meet their goals back in December, at 84 per cent. But in the most recent poll, only 72 per cent of millennials expressed confidence.
The number of Generation X Canadians — aged 35 to 54 — who expressed confidence about their ability to meet their financial goals fell to 66 per cent, from 78 previously…

SaskTel annual report notes profit for the Crown, but also challenges ahead
– canadianbusiness.com
REGINA – SaskTel customers are hanging up their landlines and that’s affecting revenue.
The SaskTel annual financial report says revenue from phone service was down $234.2 million for the fiscal year ending in March because customers dropped their existing landline to go wireless.
Long-distance revenue was also down $5.4 million and the report says that’s due to loss of customers to social media, wireless and voice-over-Internet protocol.
But the Crown corporation made more on wireless services and still reported an overall net income of $126.7 million and revenue of $1.6 billion.
The company is looking at ways to stay competitive in the telecommunications industry, in part because a report released last month said the takeover of Manitoba Telecom Services (TSX:MBT) by Bell (TSX:BCE) poses risks to SaskTel.
Among other things, the report said there’s a risk that establishing Winnipeg as a western headquarters for Bell could lead to an erosion of SaskTel’s share of the Saskatchewan business market…
