VANCOUVER – The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver says home sales in Metro Vancouver in September plunged by 32.6 per cent compared to the same month last year.
The board says there were 2,253 homes sold last month, a steep drop from the 3,345 home sales recorded in September 2015.
Last month was the second month that a 15 per cent tax applied to foreign buyers of property in the city.
The composite benchmark price for all residential properties was $931,000, a 28.9 per cent increase compared to the same month last year but a 0.1 per cent decline compared to August 2016.
Board chairman Dan Morrison says there’s uncertainty in the city’s real estate market and homebuyers and sellers are having trouble establishing prices as a result.
Morrison says there is more demand for condominiums and townhomes than detached homes, supporting some analyst predictions that there’s still interest among first-time buyers to get into the Vancouver market.

At the Toronto Stock Exchange, the S&P/TSX index was down a moderate 74.26 points at 14,614.76 after nearly two hours of trading.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 30.65 points at 18,223.20, while the broader S&P 500 composite index lowered 5.18 points to 2,156.02. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite bucked the trend and rose 1.33 points to 5,302.21.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced their arena naming rights are shifting from Consol Energy Center to PPG Paints Arena.
PPG and the team say the new deal covers 20 years, although they didn’t disclose financial terms.
The move essentially transfers the arena’s naming rights from one large Pittsburgh-area company to another. Consol Energy signed on as a title sponsor of the arena when it opened in 2010.
Consol confirmed they are transferring the naming rights to PPG. The company has struggled with low energy prices in recent months and says the move is part of its corporate transformation, as it moves from a company based on coal production to one that focuses on natural gas.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – The United Arab Emirates’ main state oil company is combining two major offshore divisions as it streamlines its operations amid a slump in oil prices.
The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, or ADNOC, said Tuesday it will lump the Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company and the Zakum Development Company into a single new firm.
ADNOC CEO and Emirati Minister of State Sultan al-Jaber says the move comes as the company focuses on “driving efficiency, performance and profitability.”
Abu Dhabi holds the bulk of the oil wealth in the seven-state Emirates federation, one of OPEC’s largest crude producers.
ADNOC has a 60 per cent stake in both offshore divisions. Foreign oil companies hold minority stakes.
