Book review: Landlord By Design(Courtesy Landlordbydesign.com)
Building your real estate rental portfolio
Who it’s for: Anyone who’s ever considered becoming a landlord.
More specifically: Real estate investors who want to go beyond renting out a basement or a room in their home and want to build a real estate portfolio.
Does it have a design?: Yes. Michael Currie, an east coast landlord and property manager and one of the founders of the Fort Nova Group, offers practical advice on the decision-making process on becoming a landlord. Even better, he helps distinguish between being an accidental (or occasional) landlord, being a real estate investor and being a property manager-cum-landlord.
Why we like it: In a market filled with get-rich-in-real-estate books, mostly from the U.S., it’s great to have the insight of a Canadian landlord. Better still, Currie helps to distinguish between being a landlord and being a property manager—an often-overlooked aspect of real estate investing. Currie also wanted to offer a comprehensive guide to anyone serious about do-it-yourself real estate investment…

CALGARY – Canadian Pacific Railway reported a third-quarter profit of $347 million on Wednesday, topping its result a year ago, but falling short of investors’ expectations.
The profit amounted to $2.34 per diluted share for the quarter ended Sept. 30 compared with a profit of $323 million or $2.04 per diluted share in the same period last year when it had more shares outstanding.
On an adjusted basis, CP Rail said it earned $2.73 per diluted share for the quarter, up from $2.69 a year ago.
Analysts had expected a profit of $2.79 per share, according to data compiled by Thomson Reuters.
For the three months ended Sept. 30, the Calgary-based railway had $1.55 billion of revenue, down from $1.71 billion last year.
Shares in the company slipped $4.07 or about two per cent to $197.24 in early trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
CP Rail is entangled in a dispute with some farmers who are worried that not enough of their harvest this year will be shipped because of a rail bottleneck…

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration has set its goal for the president’s final health care sign-up season.
Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell says she expects 13.8 million people to sign up.
This is shaping up to be the most challenging sign-up season since HealthCare.gov launched in 2013 and its computer system didn’t work.
But technology isn’t the issue this time. Premiums are going up sharply in many parts of the country, and some major insurers have bailed.
The administration says subsidies will cushion most of the impact of premium increases.
The government says enrolment averaged more than 10 million people through the first half of 2016, and more than 8 in 10 were receiving financial help.
Open enrolment starts Nov. 1 and ends Jan. 31.

2016 Predictions October Update

Learn, save, invest and prosper with My Own Advisor.
I enjoy predictions, I treat them as entertainment.  I had some fun with my 2015 predictions and I actually got a few of them right.
Many months ago I predicted the financial markets would be a wild ride in 2016.  It’s actually been a nice uphill climb since the beginning of the year for the Canadian stock market – but the year isn’t over yet.
What stocks would raise their dividends in 2016?  How would our dollar finish this year?  Here was my forecast for 2016 and where things stand today.

The Ottawa Senators will make the playoffs.

Nope.  I didn’t come close to getting this prediction right, unfortunately.  With new head coach Guy Boucher in town now, the Senators should be able to turn the page on an old chapter and start a new one for the 2016-2017 campaign.  At least Sens fans like me are hoping so – they are off to a decent start this fall.

The Chicago Blackhawks will win The Stanley Cup.

Wrong again…
