Print newspapers are dead? Not after historic elections
NEW YORK (AP) — Print newspapers may be disappearing like the home telephone, but not after Election Day.
Remembering the frenzy for old-fashioned papers the morning after Barack Obama’s historic win in 2008, newspapers are printing extra copies and setting up temporary retail stands this year, regardless of whether the nation elects the first woman or reality TV star as president.
Many people now rely on Facebook and apps for news, but a screenshot doesn’t have quite the same romance as a newspaper’s front page.

US stock market notches biggest gain in 8 months; oil rises
The U.S. stock market rebounded from a nine-day losing streak Monday, posting its biggest gain in eight months.
The gains came as investors mostly focused on the latest developments in the U.S. presidential race a day before the general election.
The FBI announced late Sunday that its review of newly discovered Hillary Clinton emails found no evidence warranting charges…

BEIJING, China – China’s exports fell again in October in a fresh sign that weak global demand is complicating efforts by Beijing leaders to shore up economic growth and reduce reliance on trade and investment.
Exports contracted by 7.3 per cent from a year earlier to $178.1 billion, an improvement from September’s 10 per cent decline, customs data showed Tuesday. Imports fell 1.4 per cent to $129.1 billion, compared with the previous month’s 1.9 per cent decline.
“Goods exports improved somewhat in October after the major setback in September, but not enough to prevent a further loss of momentum and underscoring that the recent trend toward somewhat stronger global demand growth remains fragile,” Louis Kuijs of Oxford Economics said in a report.
Growth in the world’s second-largest economy held steady at 6.7 per cent in the three months ending in September, but that was the lowest quarterly level since the 2008 global crisis. Growth was shored up by consumer spending and a bank lending boom but forecasters expect it to weaken because regulators are trying to cool a surge in real estate prices and credit…

NEW ORLEANS – A New Orleans investment firm has begun marketing gold coins from a 300-year-old shipwreck discovered off Florida’s coast.
Blanchard and Co. is one of two dealers offering the coins from an area where 11 treasure-laden ships of a Spanish fleet were smashed onto reefs by a hurricane on July 31, 1715. The other dealer is California-based Monaco Rare Coins.
John Albanese, a New Jersey-based coin expert who brokered the sales, said in an interview Friday that most of the 295 coins being offered were found by divers exploring the area last year on the 300th anniversary of the disaster.
Albanese said a few are from earlier expeditions in 2010 and 2013. He said the combined market value of the coins is more than $1 million.
The coins vary in denomination, size and shape. “They were very crudely made. They were handmade,” said Albanese, who added that the coins’ worth at the time they were made was based on their weight.
A Blanchard news release says the coins were struck in Colombia, Mexico and Peru…

Rebuilding an RESP from scratchJillian Reichmann, 29 (Photo by Curtis Comeau)
The Problem
The 29-year-old massage therapist from Edmonton is disappointed in the RESP she set up for her kids. Since the birth of her daughters—Kaia, 9, and Cyan, 2—she’s built up a $25,000 RESP portfolio, but it mostly consists of her contributions and grant money, with little in the way of market returns. Jillian was just 19 when Kaia was born and didn’t know very much about investing when she was sold an RESP while still in the maternity ward. She didn’t notice it was mostly invested in low-return bond mutual funds with big front-end loads. So last summer, she bit the bullet, paid a steep penalty and moved the education savings to a TD Waterhouse Family Plan RESP. “Now as a DIY investor, I want lower-fee investments and better returns.”

The Fix
Shannon Bender, an investment advisor with PWL Capital, says the first thing Jillian should do is call Employment and Social Development Canada to ensure she is not leaving any grant money on the table…
