VANCOUVER — Relief is on the way for homeowners in British Columbia facing a jump in property taxes thanks to soaring home values.
B.C. Finance Minister Mike de Jong said the threshold to take part in the province’s homeowner grant program will increase by a third this year, to include properties with an assessed value of up to $1.6 million.
The $400,000 jump from last year’s limit will ensure nine out of 10 homes across the province are eligible to receive a basic grant of $570, he said. The program will apply to one-in-five homes in Metro Vancouver, he added.

Why the real estate market is slowing down in 2017 »

“We are doing our part to help keep housing costs affordable for families,” de Jong said in a statement.
“The strength of the province’s economy and sound fiscal management have put us in a position to raise the threshold by such a large amount this year to help homeowners.”
The announcement is the latest policy response to the red hot real estate in B…

CALGARY _ The Alberta Securities Commission is warning investors to be wary of scams _ especially those based on high-profile news stories.
The commission has issued its annual list of investor risks for 2017.
Alison Trollope, with the commission, says a number of dubious companies try attracting investors by making claims based on the state of the economy, an epidemic or a natural disaster.
She says a number of companies claimed to be close to developing a Zika virus vaccine while the 2011 Japan nuclear accident spawned another false claim about the next generation of radiation detectors.
Trollope says the companies are often thinly traded, have little revenue and no hope of fulfilling promises.
She says they’re known as pump and dump scams where stock shares are artificially inflated and the scammers sell their shares before the value craters.

Top Assets to Trade in Binary Options Format
2017 has arrived, and already investors are reorganizing their financial portfolios to hedge against possible shocks. Several major geopolitical events occurred in 2016, including the Chinese stock market meltdown in January, the Brexit vote in June, and the surprise victory of Donald Trump in November. These critical events reshaped the financial markets. For example, day traders were able to capitalize on the collapse of the Shenzhen composite index and the Shanghai composite index, by shorting Chinese stocks on Wall Street, the LSE and other European bourses.

Currency traders cashed in on the melee by shorting the CNY against other top-performing G10 currencies. Within weeks, it became apparent that the Chinese economic growth engine was stuttering. Commodities imports to China were drying up an inventory levels were rising. This had an immediate effect on copper demand, iron ore, and other metals. Countries like Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Russia, and India all suffered the fallout from the slowdown in China…

CSA steps up case against embedded commissionsIt’s been more than two decades since regulators raised concerns about embedded commissions, but a new discussion paper from the Canadian Securities Administrators suggest investors will have to wait a little longer before that changes, despite added evidence of the negative impact of those commissions.
It was back in 1995 when Glorianne Stromberg, then chair of the Ontario Securities Commission, first argued embedded commissions create a conflict of interest that misaligns the interests of the investment fund industry and investors. On Tuesday, the Canadian Securities Administrators released its latest consultation paper on this issue to review the options. While the paper doesn’t yet change the way advisors are paid, it presents the strongest case to date for why the investment industry needs to change and offers glimpse of how the industry will look once these commissions eliminated.
“Regulators have taken far too long,” says John De Goey, a portfolio manager with iA Securities, who questions why it’s taken more than 20 years for regulators act on the evidence that embedded commissions run counter to investor interests…
