ETFs that limit losses in an investment portfolio: are they for real? Apr 6th
Q. We would like to find a product that will offer good, solid downside protection. I purchased the Invesco S&P 500 Downside Hedged ETF (PHDG), but I’m not sure if just leaving it in our portfolio is a good idea. We have a small account and never use stop losses, so we need a good product.

Couche Tard Q2 profit surges to record on acquisitions, despite hurricane costs
– canadianbusiness.com
MONTREAL _ Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. says its earnings surged 35 per cent to a record US$435.3 million in its latest quarter as the CST Brands acquisition more than offset the negative impact of hurricanes in the U.S. south.
The Quebec-based convenience store operator, which reports in U.S. dollars, says it earned 76 cents per diluted share in the second quarter of its fiscal year, up from 57 cents or $321.5 million a year earlier.
“This is even more remarkable in light of the challenges faced by some (of) our network due to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and the continued softness in the industry in general,” Couche-Tard CEO Brian Hannasch said in a news release.
Couche-Tard said the two hurricanes reduced sales and caused property damage in Texas and Florida costing $4.8 million.
Excluding one-time charges, Couche-Tard (TSX:ATD.B) earned $458 million or 80 cents per share for the three months ended Oct. 15. That compared to $328 million or 58 cents per share in the prior year…

Finance minister Morneau rejects Tory insinuation, threatens legal action
– canadianbusiness.com
OTTAWA _ Finance Minister Bill Morneau is threatening to take the Conservatives to court after the official Opposition peppered him with questions about a stock sale that occurred before he introduced pension legislation in the House of Commons.
Morneau calls the insinuations by Tory finance critic Pierre Poilievre “absurd” and says they have “no basis in any sort of fact.”
Poilievre says a motion introduced by Morneau in December 2015 to raise income taxes on the highest earners caused the entire stock market to drop _ including the price of Morneau Shepell shares, 680,000 of which the minister sold off a week before the announcement.
If Poilievre and others want to make such claims outside the Commons, where MPs enjoy the legal protection afforded by parliamentary privilege, they will be hearing from the minister’s lawyers, Morneau suggested Tuesday in a hastily called news conference on Parliament Hill.
“If the Opposition want to continue with these absurd allegations, which have no basis in any sort of fact, they take them outside of the House and I will give them a sense of exactly how our legal system works,” Morneau said…
