TORONTO _ Canada’s largest real estate board said Greater Toronto Area home sales in March were down 39.5 per cent from a frenzied pace last year, as the market continued to feel the effects of cooling measures introduced at both the provincial and federal levels.
Both sales and price figures reported by the Toronto Real Estate Board on Wednesday dropped significantly from last year _ what some observers consider a market peak _when home prices and sales skyrocketed and bidding wars became the norm, pushing the Ontario government to introduce a package of measures last April to cool the market.
That was followed by a financial stress test for buyers, which officially came into effect on Jan. 1 for federally regulated lenders, following an October announcement by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions. In addition, both variable and fixed-rate mortgage rates have risen over the past year as a result of moves by the Bank of Canada and fluctuations in the bond markets…

Shares in Eldorado Gold Corp. rose by as much as 14 per cent on Wednesday after it announced that an arbitration panel had ruled in its favour in its dispute with the Greek government over its Madem Lakkos metallurgical plant.
The panel rejected allegations that a technical study was deficient and was in violation of a transfer contract and the environmental terms of the project, the Canadian miner said in a statement.
The Madem Lakkos plant is designed to treat ore concentrates from its Olympias gold and silver mine and Skouries development project, two of three deposits that are part of the Kassandra assets owned by Eldorado’s Greek subsidiary.
“We believe this decision provides a foundation to allow us to advance dialogue with the Greek government in order to define a mutually agreeable and clear path forward for our Kassandra investments,” Eldorado CEO George Burns said in a statement.
“We look to the Greek state to fulfil its obligations under the transfer contract including issuing the outstanding permits for the Skouries project…

VANCOUVER _ Metro Vancouver home sales over the first quarter of this year were the lowest in five years, but statistics from the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver show prices remain high.
The board says home sales across the region in March tumbled 29.7 per cent compared with March 2017 and are 23 per cent below the 10-year March sales average.
Just over 2,500 homes changed hands last month, a drop of more than 1,000 compared with a year ago, although the board notes the March 2018 sales climbed 14 per cent compared with February.
Listings of detached, attached and apartment properties also fell year-over-year, skidding 6.6 per cent in March compared with March 2017, marking the region’s lowest total of first-quarter new listings since 2013.
Real estate board data shows the number of sales compared to the number of active listings soared to 61.6 per cent for condominiums in March, while the rate was 39.9 per cent for townhomes, far above the 20 per cent rate the board says tends to push prices upward…
