Plus, just in time for your next snow day, you can earn up to five Canadian Lift Passes, valid on more than 50 mountains across the country.

The economic havoc caused by the COVID-19 pandemic may be subsiding but for many Canadians, their financial picture is no healthier than it was five years ago. As of early 2025, the Bank of Canada (BoC) policy rate is back in check following cooling inflation rates but the cost of living remains high across the country. For many Canadians, the only way to make ends meet is to use their credit cards.

How much debt does the average Canadian carry?

The average credit card balance for Canadians in the third quarter of 2024 was $4,562, according to TransUnion. This is up 6.97% from the previous year, putting credit card debt as the fastest-growing type of consumer debt over car loans, lines of credit and mortgages. (If you get a work bonus, find out if you should use it to pay off credit card debt or put it toward something else.)

Driven partly by millennial and Gen Z populations, the number of Canadians with credit ballooned, as did the total outstanding new debt—a record $2…
