BMO Financial Group reports $2.14B Q1 profit up from $1.29B a year ago

Q1 earnings: $2.14 billion, up from $1.29 billion a year earlier.

Revenue: $9.27 billion, up from $7.67 billion a year earlier.

BMO Financial Group says it earned $2.14 billion in its first quarter, up from $1.29 billion in the same quarter last year, helped by strength in its wealth management and capital markets businesses.

The bank said Tuesday the profit amounted to $2.83 per diluted share for the quarter ended Jan. 31, up from $1.73 per diluted share a year earlier.

Revenue totalled $9.27 billion, up from $7.67 billion in the same quarter last year.

The bank’s provision for credit losses amounted to $1.01 billion in its latest quarter, up from $627 million in the same quarter last year.

Nvidia’s 2025 fourth quarter earnings analysis: revenue up, production upNvidia on Wednesday reported a surge in fourth-quarter profit and sales as demand for its specialized Blackwell chips, which power artificial intelligence systems, continued to grow, sending the company’s stock higher after hours. For the three months, that ended Jan. 26, the tech giant based in Santa Clara, California, posted revenue of USD$39.3 billion, up 12% from the previous quarter and 78% from one year ago. Adjusted for one-time items, it earned USD$0.89 a share. (All values are in U.S. currency.)

The economic havoc caused by the COVID-19 pandemic may be subsiding but for many Canadians, their financial picture is no healthier than it was five years ago. As of early 2025, the Bank of Canada (BoC) policy rate is back in check following cooling inflation rates but the cost of living remains high across the country. For many Canadians, the only way to make ends meet is to use their credit cards. 

How much debt does the average Canadian carry? 

The average credit card balance for Canadians in the third quarter of 2024 was $4,562, according to TransUnion. This is up 6.97% from the previous year, putting credit card debt as the fastest-growing type of consumer debt over car loans, lines of credit and mortgages. Another source, Wealthsimple, reports a similar amount but a bit higher than at $4,787.

Driven partly by millennial and Gen Z populations, the number of Canadians with credit ballooned, as did the total outstanding new debt—a record $2.5 trillion at the end of 2024…
