TSX heads higher as commodities rise, General Electric beats expectations

TORONTO – The Toronto stock market closed higher as energy stocks advanced while oil prices hit a 16-month high and traders took in a mixed batch of U.S. earnings.
The S&P/TSX composite index gained 56.28 points to 12,685.13.
The Canadian dollar was up 0.08 of a cent to 96.46 cents US as inflation came in at an annualized rate of 1.2 per cent, which was in line with expectations.
U.S. indexes were generally lower as the Dow Jones industrials lost 4.8 points to 15,543.74 but found some support from an earnings report from General Electric that beat expectations.
The Nasdaq fell 23.66 points to 3,587.61 as Google and Microsoft missed on earnings and revenue. The S&P 500 index edged 2.72 points higher to 1,692.09.
Oil edged up one cent to US$108.05 a barrel after rising as high as $109.32, the highest price since March 1, 2012.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Technology stocks are slumping on Wall Street after weak results from Microsoft of Google, but the rest of the market is closing out a decent week.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 managed a small gain, enough for the index to set another record high.
The S&P edged up two points, or 0.2 per cent, to 1,692. It rose 0.7 per cent for the week.
The Dow Jones industrial average slipped five points, 0.03 per cent, to 15,543, held back by losses in Microsoft and IBM.
The Nasdaq fell 23 points, 0.7 per cent, to 3,587. The Nasdaq was the only major index to lose ground for the week.
Microsoft plunged 11 per cent after writing off $900 million on its tablet computer.
Slightly more stocks rose than fell on the New York Stock Exchange.

SEC files charges against hedge fund founder Cohen for failing to prevent insider trading

WASHINGTON – The Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday filed civil charges against Steven A. Cohen that accused the billionaire hedge-fund manager of failing to prevent insider trading.
Cohen, 57, founded and runs SAC Capital Advisors, among the largest hedge funds that at one point managed assets of more than $15 billion. The government has called the SAC Capital case one of the biggest insider-trading fraud cases in history.
The SEC said Cohen failed to supervise two portfolio managers at the fund and prevent them from illegal insider trading. As a result of the trades, the fund reaped profits and avoided losses of more than $275 million, the SEC said.
Both managers provided information to Cohen that suggested they had access to inside information, the SEC said. Rather than report them, he praised one of the managers for the trades and rewarded the other with a $9 million bonus, according to the SEC.
The SEC is seeking unspecified fines against Cohen. The case will be heard by an administrative law judge at the SEC…
