The Competition Tribunal has dismissed the case against Visa and MasterCard. At the crux of the debate are s0-called interchange fees. Basically, card issuers are charging merchants more to process premium cards that offer cardholders reward points for things like travel. As a result, merchants wanted the ability to refuse these higher cost cards while still accepting the more basic credit cards since existing Visa and MasterCard policies don’t allow this. The ruling Tuesday will allow Visa and MasterCard to continue enforcing their current policies. If a merchant accepts Visa, he or she must accept all Visa cards regardless of the interchange fee.
