HONG KONG – Two of China’s major state-owned banks posted higher half-year profits Thursday even as the world’s No. 2 economy slows and authorities seek to cool a credit boom.
Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, the country’s biggest state-owned lender and one of the world’s biggest banks, said that January-June profit rose 12.4 per cent to 138.5 billion yuan ($22.6 billion). Bank of China said its profit grew nearly 13 per cent to 80.7 billion yuan ($13 billion).
Both banks posted higher earnings from loans and fees in the first half of the year compared with the same period in 2012.

LONDON – Co-operative Bank reported a net loss of 781.5 million pounds ($1.2 billion) for the first half versus a 45.3 million pounds loss a year earlier as it struggles to rectify problems arising from the financial crisis.
The bank — a part of Britain largest mutual business — wrote off 496 million pounds in bad loans taken on in the 2009 acquisition of Britannia Building Society.
In its statement Thursday, the bank claimed it was turning things around. A rescue plan has been announced, with parent Co-Op Group pledging to fill a 1.5 billion pound ($2.3 billion) hole in the balance sheet by converting bonds into shares.
Moody’s has downgraded the bank’s debt and deposit ratings to junk status, arguing that Co-op failed to assess the losses from the Britannia portfolio.

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – The head of the Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association says a move by Gray Aquaculture to file for bankruptcy protection is indicative of a slight downturn in the industry.
However, Cyr Couturier says he’s confident the overall industry will remain strong in the province.
Couturier says Gray represents about 10 to 15 per cent of the province’s overall salmon production.
The company took a financial hit after a number of recent cases of Infectious Salmon Anemia forced it to destroy its stocks.
Couturier says there will be a downturn in the overall output of farmed salmon this year and next.
He says production this year should be in the range of 20 to 25 thousand tonnes.
