McDonald’s raises quarterly dividend by 5 per cent to 81 cents; payout totals over $800 million
– canadianbusiness.com
OAK BROOK, Ill. – McDonald’s is raising its quarterly cash dividend by 5 per cent, bringing its fourth-quarter payout to more than $800 million.
The world’s largest hamburger chain says its quarterly dividend increases to 81 cents from 77 cents, for an annual total of $3.24 per share. It will make the next payout on Dec. 16 to shareholders of record at Dec. 2. McDonald’s Corp. expects to return between $4.5 billion and $5 billion to its shareholders through dividends and stock repurchases in 2013.
McDonald’s has raised its dividend every year since making its first payout in 1976. In July, the Oakbrook, Ill., company reported a 4 per cent rise in second-quarter profit but missed expectations and warned of a tough year ahead, given heightened competition and rough economic conditions around the world.

Man pleads guilty in $5M investment scam; sentenced to 2 years in prison
– canadianbusiness.com
TORONTO – A man has been sentenced to two years in prison for a nearly $5-million investment scam, the Ontario Securities Commission said Wednesday.
Terrence Bedford pleaded guilty to one count of fraud under the Securities Act in Ontario court.
The OSC said Bedford admitted to misleading roughly 24 Canadian and American investors between 2000 and 2011 into believing that a fund he ran called Greyhawk Equity Partners Limited Partnership was highly profitable.
The regulator said he created fake documents for investors that hid the true value of the fund and the actual investment losses.
“This case demonstrates that the OSC continues to aggressively pursue people who commit securities fraud in Ontario’s capital market,” said Tom Atkinson, the OSC’s director of enforcement.
“It is important that the appropriate sentences are imposed for serious financial crime to deter like-minded individuals.”

Treasury blacklists 2 Indonesians with alleged links to Islamic militancy
– canadianbusiness.com
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Treasury has blacklisted two Indonesians for their alleged links to Islamic militant groups.
Treasury said Wednesday that 51-year-old Said Ahmad Sungkar raised funds for Jemmah Anshorut Tauhid, or JAT, which attacked Indonesian government personnel and civilians, and previously served as media chief for Jemaah Islamiyah, a Southeast Asia-based terrorist network with links to al-Qaida.
Also blacklisted is 58-year-old Afif Abdul Majid, described as a senior JAT leader who has overseen the recruitment and training of terrorists in Indonesia.
The Treasury action freezes any assets Sungkar and Majid may have in the U.S. and bars Americans from transactions with them.
Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, has been battling Islamic militants since the 2002 bombings in Bali by Jemaah Islamiyah which killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists.
