Prudential says examining options after government organization says it needs more scrutiny
– canadianbusiness.com
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Insurer Prudential says it is weighing its options after government regulators found that it needs more oversight.
Prudential Financial Inc. said Thursday that after a hearing and a final vote, the Financial Stability Oversight Council decided the company needs greater government scrutiny.
In June, the council proposed that a group of firms including Prudential that aren’t banks be subject to stricter regulatory oversight because they are potential threats to the financial system.
Prudential, which is based in Newark, N.J., says it has 30 days to consider its response. It says it is reviewing its options as well as the rationale behind the council’s move.

TransUnion: US homeowners increasingly prioritizing mortgage payments as home values rise
– canadianbusiness.com
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A new study suggests that the steady rise in U.S. home values is increasingly motivating homeowners to make paying their mortgage on time a priority.
Credit reporting agency TransUnion said Thursday that its study examined late payment rates of mortgages, credit cards and auto loans among consumers with the three types of financial obligations.
The study found consumers are still most likely to make timely payments on their auto loans ahead of credit cards and home loans.
But through last year, as home values have increased, the late-payment rate on mortgages nearly closed the gap with credit cards.
TransUnion says that suggests a return to behaviour before the housing bust, when financially distressed borrowers typically prioritized paying their mortgage ahead of credit cards.
