MARKHAM, Ont. – American Express Canada said Thursday it has signed new multi-year agreements with Aeroplan parent company Aimia (TSX:AIM) and Air Canada (TSX:AC.B).
Financial terms were not available.
The agreements, which extend a long-standing relationship between the companies, include plans for a new travel credit card next year.
American Express currently offers co-branded charge cards that allows users to earn Aeroplan points.
Aeroplan also allows American Express members to exchange their membership rewards points for Aeroplan points.
The American Express deal follows a decision earlier this year by Aimia to pick TD Bank (TSX:TD) as the primary issuer of Visa credit cards for the Aeroplan program over CIBC, which had held that distinction for more than 20 years.
CIBC contested Aimia’s decision and eventually reached a deal to keep about half of its Aeroplan credit card customers.

Not too much to pass along today as I was speaking at the Mega Event here in Vancouver today on the Canadian Co-brand credit market. News, Tips & Tricks On the topic of Co-Brands, Aimia, Aeroplan and American Express today announced a new multi-year agreement for American Express to continue to offer Aeroplan card products. The biggest take away from the press release is the following “The new agreements extend the long relationship between the three companies and will include enhancements to the existing suite of premium AeroplanPlus co-branded charge cards with a unique new premium travel credit card launching next year” It looks like American Express is taking a proactive approach to the upcoming new TD Aeroplan cards as they are planning to launch a new premium card next year! There are lots of different rumours floating around here as to what TD is going to offer such as taking care of your Nexus application and others so no doubt American Express will want to make sure they don’t lose customers to TD and as such they will be coming out with this new card…
