TORONTO – The Toronto stock market appeared headed for a lower start to the trading week amid mixed economic news out of Asia and mixed commodities.
The Canadian dollar slipped 0.03 of a cent to 93.81 cents US.
U.S. futures were lacklustre following a strong slate of economic data last week, including strong manufacturing and housing reports, better than expected third-quarter economic growth and improving consumer confidence. The week was capped off by U.S. data showing stronger than expected job growth last month.
The Dow Jones industrial futures were ahead nine points to 16,022, the Nasdaq futures rose 5.3 points to 3,509.3 and the S&P 500 futures climbed 1.8 points to 1,806.8.
While the data was a welcome sign that the American economic revival remains on track, it also raised concerns that the Federal Reserve is set to start winding up its asset buying program sooner than thought, perhaps as early as next week when Fed members meet.
Speculation about tapering those US$85 billion of bond purchases has weighed on markets as the stimulus has kept long term rates low and supported a strong rally on equity markets this year…

OAK BROOK, Ill. – McDonald’s said Monday that a key sales figure rose 0.5 per cent in November, even as the world’s biggest hamburger chain faced tough competition and basically flat traffic in the U.S.
Its global sales performance was the same as in October. The stock slipped in premarket trading.
Sales at stores open at least a year is a key gauge of health because it excludes results from stores recently opened or closed.
The company said that the metric fell 0.8 per cent in the U.S. While breakfast items, chicken options and its new expanded value menu did well, that was pressured by intense competition and flat traffic.
In Europe, it increased 1.9 per cent on strong performances in the U.K., France and Russia. This was somewhat offset by weakness in Germany.
It declined 2.3 per cent in the region including Asia, the Pacific, the Middle East and Africa mostly because of softness in Japan.
McDonald’s Corp. said that the figure includes sales at all restaurants open at least 13 months, including those temporarily closed…
