CRANSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee says the flagship game under development by Curt Schilling’s defunct video game company is “a lot of junk” and he’s not surprised it failed to sell at auction.
Schilling’s 38 Studios was developing a game with the help of a $75 million state loan guarantee when it went bankrupt last year. A court-appointed receiver has been trying to sell its assets. An auction last week produced no acceptable offers for the game.
Chafee says people panicked over the state’s collapsing economy and “gave a retired baseball player a huge amount of taxpayer money” even though he had no business experience.
He says he’s focusing on recouping the money, rather than figuring out how the decision was made.
