China e-commerce giant Alibaba says it’s gearing up for US IPO
– canadianbusiness.com
HONG KONG – Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba says it’s gearing up to go public on a U.S. stock exchange in what is likely to be the world’s biggest IPO this year.
The company said Sunday that it has “decided to commence the process of an initial public offering in the United States.”
The move ends months of speculation over where the company would list its shares after talks for a stock sale in Hong Kong fell apart late last year.
Analysts have estimated that an Alibaba IPO could raise up to $15 billion and value the company at more than $100 billion.
In a brief statement, Alibaba Group gave no details about the plan for the IPO, which it said would “enhance the company’s transparency.”

Our TFSA and RRSP Considerations for 2014
– myownadvisor.ca
Over the last few weeks, I’ve received a number of emails from readers asking questions about Tax Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs) and Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs). Here was another recent question, paraphrasing and quoting where I can:
“Love your blog! It has really helped me enter the self-directed investment world.” Given that it is the beginning of the year, “it would be great to know what stocks or ETFs you are considering for your TFSA and RRSP this year. Keep up the great work!”
Thanks for this email (and the nice words about the blog by the way). Here are our TFSA and RRSP considerations for 2014.
TFSA
My approach for this account won’t change this year from what we did in 2013 or even the year before. I’ve written about this a few times on my blog but our approach for this account is to buy and hold Canadian blue-chip stocks and Canadian equity Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). That’s it. For each holding within the TFSA I reinvest dividends paid each month or each quarter to purchase more stock shares and ETF units commission-free…

Disappearance of Flight 370 unveils flaws in aviation system, but change not guaranteed
– canadianbusiness.com
NEW YORK, N.Y. – The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 has exposed wide gaps in how the world’s airlines — and their regulators — operate. But experts warn this isn’t likely to be one of those defining moments that lead to fundamental changes.
For financial and technological reasons, and because of issues tied to national sovereignty, the status quo is expected to prevail in the way passports are checked, aircraft are tracked at sea and searches are co-ordinated.
In an age of constant connectedness, it’s almost inconceivable to lose a 209-foot-long airplane for more than a week, or be in the dark about what happened onboard around the time it went missing.
The reality is that large portions of the globe don’t have radar coverage. Over oceans, pilots fill in those gaps by radioing air traffic controllers at routine intervals with position updates. And while planes record sounds in the cockpit as well as speed, altitude, fuel flow and the positions of flaps, that information isn’t shared with anyone on the ground…
