Starting Over in a New Country
It has been over five years since I immigrated to Toronto from India. As I look back, mixed feelings of naivety, accomplishment and learning overpower me. The learning curve has been an ongoing process for me – though I’ve long been in the habit of calculating the cost of dollars to rupees, which makes everything from coffee to renting an apartment seemingly expensive.
Although I am from Generation Y, having grown up along many world changing events like the development of technology and mass communications, I am still wary about adopting new concepts.
With no family here and with little guidance, my road to settlement in Canada has been mostly through trial and error…

That’s half off the normal price. There are also business class offers for Toronto-Austria on Austrian for only 55,000 miles instead of the regular 105,000 miles. Granted all these tickets will also have fuel surcharges but this is still a pretty good deal when you look at it as a whole in terms of miles+cash outlay. Canadian Tire Archives1. Rewards are moving targets. Loyalty programs have carte blanche to change expiry dates, redemption levels and rewards at any time. As recently as last year, for instance, Petro Canada eliminated the option to redeem Petro Points for select free drinks and snacks. They replaced it with a $1-off drink and snack reward on a wider selection of products. “There are changes to Aeroplan and Air Miles every few months, it seems,” says Rewards Cards Canada founder Patrick Sojka.
2. Programs make you spend more. A Maritz Loyalty Marketing survey showed that 70% of Canadian program participants say their memberships increase their likelihood of doing business with a brand. Not only are they coming back, but they’re also spending more. In fact, 31% of the surveyed program members say they tend to spend more after having joined, compared to before. That number jumps to 55% for co-branded payment cards.
3. The burn rate burns, badly. The so-called “burn rate” is really a factor with merchandise and travel reward programs…

The recent rules put in place about 2 or so years ago are being relaxed from 24 months to 36 months or none if you hold elite status or a credit card with the program.Just minutes before this post we posted the newest buy miles offers from Avianca and US Airways, which are by far the two best offers out there but those aren’t the only offers out there. We also added new buy miles bonuses from Air France KLM Flying Blue and Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan to the bonus offers section.
