Bring on the barbecue circuit
– macleans.ca
OTTAWA — School’s out for summer — well, almost. Maybe.
As kids across the country gleefully watch the clock tick its way toward the end of the academic year, politicians in Ottawa are doing the same.
The parliamentary calendar extends to June 20 this year, but there have been indications that the spring session of the Commons could come to a close as early as today.
New Democrat MPs have been hinting they won’t allow it.
But they’ve made similar noises in years past, only to sit on their hands in favour of returning to their constituencies and the summer barbecue circuit.
Here are some other events happening today in and around the national capital:
It’s election day in Ontario, where voters will choose between Kathleen Wynne’s Liberals, the Conservatives under Tim Hudak or Andrea Horwath and the NDP.
Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz will hold a news conference to talk about the central bank’s financial system review;
A plethora of news releases will come from Statistics Canada today including the industrial capacity utilization rates statement for the first quarter, the new housing price index for April and a Canadian Community Health Survey for 2013;
The Supreme Court of Canada will pronounce on a number of leave to appeal applications…

Lululemon yoga wear company reports a lower Q1 profit but higher revenues
– canadianbusiness.com
VANCOUVER – Lululemon Athletica Inc. is reporting a lower first-quarter profit of $19 million as the yoga wear company moves to boost its share price and move beyond boardroom controversy.
Lululemon (Nasdaq:LULU) said Thursday that its board of directors has approved a stock buy-back program up to US$450 million of its common shares to create more shareholder value after seeing its shares sink over the past year.
The Vancouver company’s shareholders re-elected two directors a day earlier that the company’s founder and largest shareholder Chip Wilson voted against in an apparent boardroom backlash, the latest controversy to come to light at the struggling retailer.
Wilson, who founded the company in 1998, had said he felt change was needed at the board level to boost the company’s lagging share price.
However, the majority of shareholders didn’t agree with Wilson’s position, and neither did the company.
CEO Laurent Potdevin said while the company is pleased with the first-quarter results, 2014 is “very much a transitional year” for Lululemon…

Detroit is now the hottest market for landlords
– moneysense.ca
(iStock)Motor City is hardly one of the more desirable places to live in the United States, but data provided by RealtyTrac shows that Detroit offers U.S. real estate buyers the biggest return on their investment. Thanks to ultra-low housing prices, the monthly mortgage payments in Detroit are far less than average monthly rents for the same properties. As you can see below, you can still charge a reasonable rent in depressed areas, so the cheaper the house, the bigger the profit.
American counties with the biggest real estate returns:
Detroit-Warren-Livonia, Mich.
Median home price: $44,900
Avg. monthly rent: $1,124
30% annual return
Greenville, Miss.
Median home price: $42,000
Avg. monthly rent: $862

Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, Ga.
Median home price: $50,750
Avg. monthly rent: $1,187
28% annual return
Macon, Ga.
Median home price: $50,880:
Avg. monthly rent: $1,008
