EU antitrust body OKs Telefonica’s buy of German E-Plus mobile operator from KPN with caveats
– canadianbusiness.com
BRUSSELS – The European Union’s antitrust authority has approved mobile network operator Telefonica’s 8.55 billion-euro ($11.7 billion) bid to buy its competitor E-Plus under certain conditions, creating Germany’s biggest mobile phone company in terms of customers.
The EU Commission said Wednesday the deal is conditional on Telefonica selling up to 30 per cent of the merged company’s network capacity to service providers to boost competition.
It says Telefonica must also shed some assets and improve conditions offered to service providers. Those firms sell mobile phone contracts without having their own network, relying on wholesale agreements with incumbent operators.
Telefonica agreed to purchase E-Plus from Dutch telecommunications company Royal KPN NV, after winning the support of KPN’s biggest shareholder, Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim.
Telefonica plans to merge E-Plus with its own German arm, O2.

Chinese envoy says Philippines, China must work jointly to boost weak economic ties
– canadianbusiness.com
MANILA, Philippines – China’s ambassador to the Philippines says economic ties between the two countries are at disappointing levels and both must work to advance their common prosperity.
The two Asian neighbours are embroiled in a territorial row in the South China Sea.
Ambassador Zhao Jianhua said late Tuesday that the Philippines gets only 1.4 per cent of China’s outbound direct investment to 10 Southeast Asian countries, with Singapore receiving 46.3 per cent.
He did not refer to the territorial dispute but called the Philippines’ share of the Chinese investment pie “too disappointing,” with the Philippines investing more in China than the other way around.
He also says 426,000 Chinese tourists visited the country last year, while 4 million Chinese tourists go to Malaysia yearly and 3 million to Thailand.
