Ga. judge grants 2-week trial delay for 3 charged in deadly salmonella outbreak from peanuts
– canadianbusiness.com
Three people charged in a deadly salmonella outbreak traced to a southwest Georgia peanut plant five years ago will go on trial two weeks later than initially planned, a judge decided Friday.
The decision was a last-minute break for former Peanut Company of America owner Stewart Parnell; his brother and food broker, Michael Parnell; and the peanut plant’s quality control manager, Mary Wilkerson. Jury selection in their trial had been scheduled to start Monday in U.S. District Court in Albany.
Judge W. Louis Sands postponed the trial until July 28. Defence attorneys argued they needed more time to review thousands of pages of evidence they had received from prosecutors since late June.
The judge’s written order wasn’t immediately available Friday evening. Thomas Bondurant, one of Stewart Parnell’s attorneys, and a U.S. attorney’s spokeswoman, Pam Lightsey, both confirmed the judge’s decision.

SAN FRANCISCO – The former head of the nation’s largest pension fund admitted Friday that he took bribes, including hundreds of thousands of dollars stuffed in paper bags and a shoe box, and helped an associate collect millions in a fraudulent investment scheme.
Fred Buenrostro Jr. pleaded guilty in San Francisco federal court to fraud and bribery charges stemming from his time as chief executive of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System from 2002 to 2008.
In his plea agreement, Buenrostro said that in exchange for his help Alfred Villalobos, a former CalPERS board member, took him on a trip around the world, gave him casino chips and paid for his wedding in Lake Tahoe, California.
Villalobos denied the allegations through his attorney Friday.
Buenrostro’s guilty plea arises from a yearslong investigation into the role of money-management firm middlemen, called placement agents, in helping clients win investment business from a California pension system that controls $300 billion…

Head of US agency Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp resigning; Gotbaum longest-serving PBGC head
– canadianbusiness.com
WASHINGTON – The federal agency that insures company pensions for more than 40 million Americans says its top official is resigning.
Joshua Gotbaum, a former investment banker, was appointed by President Barack Obama as director of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. in July 2010. That makes him the longest-serving head of the agency in its history, the PBGC said in a news release Friday. During his tenure the agency’s deficit — the gap between pension obligations and assets available to cover them — widened to about $34 billion as the weak economy triggered more corporate bankruptcies and failed pension plans.
Gotbaum will step down in August, the agency said. No further information was given, and agency spokesmen didn’t immediately return a message requesting it.
Gotbaum said in a letter to the PBGC staff that with three children in college, he had promised his wife he would return to the private sector, according to reports Friday in The Wall Street Journal and other publications…
