LAVAL, Que. – Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, Inc. (TSX:VRX) is extending the deadline for its more than US$50-billion hostile takeover bid for Botox-maker Allergan (NYSE:AGN).
Quebec-based Valeant, whose cash-and-stock offer was set to expire on Friday, announced after markets closed Friday that it was extending the bid until 5 p.m. ET on Dec 31.
Valeant, backed by activist investor Bill Ackman, whose Pershing Square Capital Investment holds some 10 per cent of Allergan stock, originally announced its takeover bid back in April and has since boosted it twice to some US$53 billion.
Valeant said on Friday that all other terms and conditions of the bid remain unchanged under the extension.
Meanwhile, Allergan has steadfastly rejected the offer, at times disparaging both the bid and Valeant’s business model.

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Electric car maker Tesla Motors says it has extended the drive-unit warranty for its Model S sedan to make it good for eight years and unlimited miles.
The drive-unit warranty, now matching that for the battery pack, will apply retroactively to all Model S vehicles and all owners. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in a blog posting Friday that the move reflects the company’s belief that electric motors are more reliable than gasoline engines.
He wrote that the warranty extension will have “a moderately negative effect” on Tesla’s earnings in the short term as its reserves to cover warranties are increased.
Tesla, based in Palo Alto, California, is preparing for the launch of a new SUV and a massive new battery plant.

CALGARY – Some of the world’s costliest energy projects are in Alberta’s oilsands and some could be cancelled without higher oil prices, according to a new report by a London-based financial think-tank that focuses on climate risk.
The study by the Carbon Tracker Initiative highlighted 20 of the biggest projects around the world that need a minimum oil price of US$95 a barrel to be economically viable.
Most on the list require prices well north of US$110 a barrel and a few in the oilsands even need prices higher than US$150, said the report.
Crude for September delivery was at around US$97 a barrel in New York on Friday.
In total, the 20 projects represent close to $91 billion in capital spending over the next decade.
The report’s authors question whether those funds should be invested in risky projects.
“This analysis demonstrates the worsening cost environment in the oil industry and the extent to which producers are chasing volume over value at the expense of returns,” said CTI analyst Andrew Grant…
