Tony Accurso confirms Rizzuto mob links at Charbonneau inquiryConstruction magnate Tony Accurso is seen on an image taken off a television monitor at the Charbonneau inquiry looking into corruption in the Quebec construction industry on Sept. 3, 2014 in Montreal. (Paul Chiasson/CP)
Tony Accurso didn’t want to open his mouth in public. Before yesterday, journalists and archivists would have had trouble splicing together 10 seconds of the Quebec construction magnate, political power broker and suspected mob associate talking about anything, much less how he came to rule over the building of this province’s infrastructure for the better part of three decades. He went to three courts (Superior, Appeal, Supreme) to avoid having to divulge the open secret of his ascendency in front of the so-called Charbonneau inquiry into corruption in the province’s construction industry, all for naught. He ran out of tricks, and was forced to spill.
It’s made for an odd two days, and one incredible admission. Within hours we were treated to the Accurso Scowl—last seen when he was arrested on fraud and breach of trust charges in 2012—and the Accurso Grin, last seen from an undated photo in which he and business associate Joe Lombard literally washed the back of union leader Jean Lavallée in the Caribbean Ocean…

FRANKFURT – The European Central Bank has said it could use quantitative easing — the purchase of large amounts of financial assets such as bonds — as a way to boost the struggling economic recovery in the 18-country eurozone.
Such a program has been used in major economies like the U.S., Britain and Japan, but not in the eurozone.
Here are questions and answers on quantitative easing, or QE for short.
Q: What is QE?
A: Typically, it’s when a central bank buys bonds from private-sector banks or other financial institutions such as insurance companies. The central bank pays for the bonds by adding newly created money to the reserve accounts that the financial institutions are required to have with the central bank.
Q: How does that help?
A: By purchasing bonds, the central bank drives down market interest rates, making it cheaper for businesses and consumers to borrow. That’s because the purchases drive up bond prices, which move in the opposite direction of interest yields…

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg is returning to lead the financial data and news company he founded in 1981 but left to serve three terms in City Hall.
The company, Bloomberg LP, said Wednesday that current CEO Daniel Doctoroff will step down at the end of the year.
Doctoroff was a deputy mayor under Bloomberg. His departure makes way for Bloomberg to take back the helm of the company, of which he still owns more than 85 per cent.
The 72-year-old Bloomberg handed the reins of America’s largest city to Bill de Blasio on Jan. 1.
In a statement, Bloomberg said he never intended to return to his company after 12 years as mayor. But after reacquainting with its operations, he said, he could not resist its lure.
“I have gotten very involved in the company again and that led to Dan coming to me recently to say he thought it would be best for him to turn the leadership of the company back to me,” said Bloomberg, whose company has grown to employ more than 15,000 people in 73 countries and has made him a billionaire…

SALT LAKE CITY – A school where polygamous sect leader Warren Jeffs once served as principal is being demolished to make way for new luxury homes.
The former Alta Academy at the mouth of Utah’s Little Cottonwood Canyon still contains a birthing room and baptismal font.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1tu5Daq) that the religious group owned the property for about 35 years.
Jeffs served as principal starting in 1976. A nephew of his as well as a niece have testified Jeffs raped them there.
The 59-year-old Jeffs is serving a life sentence in a Texas prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting underage girls that he considered wives.
A real estate company plans to build homes worth at least $600,000 on the 4 1/2 -acre property close to popular ski areas.
