Vice Media CEO Shane Smith on how to turn your company into a cult
Vice Media CEO Shane Smith. “We’re sort of Maoist.” (Brian Ach/Getty/TechCrunch)
“We’re not afraid to give young people real jobs. At Vice, we give interns big jobs—throw them off the diving board to see if they can swim, so to speak. We’re sort of Maoist, in that we feel everyone has to be able to taste the revolution. Everyone needs to think as a partner and not as an employee. We introduced a stock options program so everyone can participate inthe ups of the company, to keep striving to be better and to never get in the mindset that a C minus is good enough. We’re an entrepreneurial company, so we try to keep that spirit. Plus, we’re like an incestuous, weird family. Everyone hangs out together, parties together and lives together. That’s a bit cultish.”
Shane Smith, CEO of Vice Media, whose empire of scrappy young journalists and content producers was recently valued at $2.5 billion

JOHANNESBURG – South Africa has named a new reserve bank governor.
Lesetja Kganyago, who was educated at the London School of Economics and the University of London, will become the country’s third governor since 1994. Marcus told the media that the appointment of a successor from within the bank was a vote of confidence. Kganyago served as Marcus’ deputy before his appointment, where he managed the banking supervision and financial surveillance sectors.
Marcus announced her plans to retire last month and will officially step down in the beginning of November after serving a single five year term.
Kganyago has worked in the country’s public service since 1996, beginning his career in the national treasury and has an extensive background with the country’s trade unions…

The loonie lingers near a five-year lowTop of the Morning
The Globe and Mail’s Tara Perkins points to another example of how, as CIBC deputy chief economist Benjamin Tal put it, we’re “flying blind” when it comes to detailed information on Canada’s real estate market:
One of the first inklings that Australia was considering a mortgage crackdown came from the central bank’s Financial Stability Review paper last month (you can read it here, and some more recent comments are made toward the end of this speech a few days ago). The paper said that Australia’s central bank, banking regulator and other financial authorities have been discussing “further steps to reinforce sound lending practices, particularly for lending to investors.”
The paper laid out the rationale for these discussions. “The composition of housing and mortgage markets is becoming unbalanced,” it said. “This has been most evident in the current strength of investor activity in the housing market, and in its concentration in Sydney and Melbourne…
