World stocks mostly down as markets awaits jobs report for verdict on Fed stimulus withdrawal
– canadianbusiness.com
World stock markets mostly retreated Thursday as investors awaited a U.S. jobs report that might deliver a verdict on whether the Federal Reserve’s withdrawal of stimulus was warranted.
KEEPING SCORE: France’s CAC 40 was down 0.5 per cent at 4,185.90 and Germany’s DAX shed 0.5 per cent to 9,271.35. Britain’s FTSE 100 fell 0.5 per cent to 6,506.14. Future pointed to losses on Wall Street. Dow futures were down 0.2 per cent at 17,385 and S&P 500 futures dropped 0.2 per cent to 2,014.20.
JOBS REPORT: A strong report on U.S. hiring from payrolls processor ADP suggested Friday’s official monthly employment figures will show robust employment growth. If that is the case, it will allay lingering worries that the Fed’s recent decision to withdraw its extraordinary stimulus, provided through a massive program of bond buying, was premature. Intended to spur economic recovery after the global recession, the stimulus helped markets defy gravity even in the face of poor company earnings or bad economic news…

Train and machinery maker Siemens sees profit rise in Q4, offers cautious outlook
– canadianbusiness.com
FRANKFURT – Industrial equipment maker Siemens AG says net profit rose 40 per cent in the fourth quarter but issued a cautious outlook for the coming year, saying global tensions would affect its business and predicting flat revenue.
Siemens also said Thursday it was selling its hearing-aid business to the investment company EQT and Germany’s Struengmann family of entrepreneurs for 2.15 billion euros.
Net income for the quarter, the company’s fiscal fourth, rose to 1.498 billion euros ($1.872 billion) from 1.068 euros in the same quarter a year ago. Revenue was flat at 20.559 billion euros.
The Munich-based maker of heavy equipment such as trains and power turbines said that the business environment would be “complex” in 2015, among other things due to geopolitical tensions.
