KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Malaysia Airlines on Friday said its loss widened last quarter and apologized for a promotional tweet slammed as insensitive after two deadly passenger jet disasters this year.
In its last public financial result before a planned privatization and overhaul, the flag carrier said its net loss in the July-September quarter rose 53 per cent from a year earlier to 576.1 million ringgit ($170.3 million).
The airline’s business has suffered after a Malaysia Airlines jet with 239 people on board, mostly from China, went missing March 8 while en route to Beijing. No trace of it has been found. In July, a Malaysia Airlines jet was shot down over Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.
As the airline’s overhaul gathers pace, it said Friday it will continue to focus on building revenue through aggressive marketing and promotions, and better capacity management.
However, its marketing strategy came under fire after the airline tweeted Thursday, “Want to go somewhere, but don’t know where?” It removed the tweet Friday, saying it was meant to inspire travellers but “unintentionally caused offence to some…

CALGARY – For International Motor Cars, a luxury dealership in Calgary, the oilpatch is big business.
But as crude prices have shifted into a lower gear, so too has demand for posh rides from energy industry customers, said general sales manager David Baker.
Baker figures the dealership has sold 30 per cent fewer cars this year compared to 2013.
“I believe it’s in direct correlation to the oilpatch,” he said.
Crude for January delivery dropped below US$70 per barrel on Thursday, down six per cent on news that the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries would maintain its output of 30 million barrels per day. There were hopes OPEC would move to put a floor under prices that have fallen about 30 per cent since mid-summer.
The previous day, the Alberta government predicted that crude prices would hover at around $75 for the remainder of the fiscal year, and warned of “tough decisions” if oil stays at that level.
Still, the chief economist at one of Western Canada’s biggest financial institutions is not raising the alarm…

In Switzerland, a gold rush to armsFabrice Coffrini/AFP/Getty Images
The Swiss, it seems, have referendums for just about everything: gun control, the deportation of criminal foreigners—even a ban on construction of new minarets. On Nov. 30, they’ll hold a referendum on Swiss gold that could affect global gold markets and have wide-ranging consequences for the nation’s economy.
In Switzerland, a country of eight million, any citizen or group that gathers at least 100,000 signatures over 18 months can force a federal referendum on popular initiatives. The Swiss People’s Party (SVP) did just that in 2011 when it launched its “Save our Swiss gold” initiative. The right-wing nationalist party, led by Toni Brunner, a dashing, 40-year-old farmer, rose dramatically on the Swiss political scene in the late 1990s with its nationalistic and anti-immigration “eurosceptic” outlook. While the country is ruled by a coalition, SVP holds more seats than any other single party in Switzerland’s Federal Assembly.
The SVP, saying it wants to preserve national sovereignty, is calling for the Swiss National Bank to increase its gold reserves to at least 20 per cent of assets, ship home all physical gold held overseas, and cease selling gold…
