Toronto market faces headwinds from weak commodity prices, malaise outside U.S.

TORONTO – The Toronto stock market appears headed for a choppy session with U.S. futures pointing to gains but commodity prices still weak amid a general economic slowdown outside of the United States.
The Canadian dollar is at 85.63 cents US, down more than half a cent from the pre-holiday close at 86.2 cents US
U.S. futures were looking positive with the Dow Jones industrial futures up 66 points at 17,818, the Nasdaq futures ahead 15 points at 4,247.80, and the S&P futures up 6.7 points at 2,059.1.
In overseas markets, the FTSE 100 was down 14.60 points at 6,551.49, the DAX was down 79.24 at 9,726.31 and the CAC 40 was down 21.51 at 4,251.24. In Asia, the Shanghai market gained 68.86 points to close at 3,234.68, the Nikkei 225 dropped 279.07 points or 1.57 per cent to 17,450.77 and the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong closed up 252.78 points or 1.1 per cent to 23,857.82.
The S&P/TSX composite index closed the trading year on Wednesday at 14,632.44, meaning the TSX ended 2014 with a gain of seven per cent, down from a gain of almost 10 per cent in 2013…

Hyundai, Kia brace for weakest sales growth in more than a decade

SEOUL, South Korea – Hyundai Motor Co. and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp. are forecasting their weakest growth in yearly car sales in more than a decade as competition intensifies and the global economy slows.
Hyundai Motor Group, the world’s fifth largest automaker, said Friday the two carmakers aim to sell a combined 8.2 million vehicles this year.
That would be an increase of just 2.5 per cent from last year’s sales about of about 8 million vehicles. Sales grew 4 per cent in each of the past two years.
Chairman Chung Mong-koo told employees in his New Year’s speech that the group should cut costs, increase productivity and share components to fend off competition from Japanese rivals boosted by a cheap yen.
Sales of Hyundai and Kia cars grew at double digit rates until 2011 as the group weathered the 2008 financial crisis by introducing new designs and marketing. The Korean group was also aided by a weak local currency. In 2010, car sales at Hyundai and Kia jumped 24 per cent combined as exports surged…

World stock markets higher on first day of 2015 trading

World stock markets started 2015 on a positive note Friday as investors waited for cues from new economic data and central bank meetings in coming weeks.
KEEPING SCORE: In early European trading, France’s CAC 40 climbed 0.5 per cent higher to 4,293.23 and Germany’s DAX rose 0.3 per cent to 9,833.87. Britain’s FTSE 100 edged up 0.1 per cent to 6,572.01. Wall Street was set for gains. Dow Jones futures jumped 0.6 per cent to 17,858. S&P 500 futures were also up 0.6 per cent, at 2,065.10.
THE QUOTE: “Like awkward first introductions at parties, the start may be a tad subdued, but that should not be mistaken for a boring and quiet year ahead,” Mizuho Bank said in a market commentary. Investors will face “crosswinds” as the U.S economy strengthens and the Federal Reserve raises interest rates while central banks in Europe and Japan are likely to give more support to stumbling economies, Mizuho said.
