TORONTO – The Investment Funds Institute of Canada says net sales of mutual funds totalled $5.36 billion in January, reflecting net long-term fund sales of $5.52 billion and net money market fund redemptions of $159.7 million.
Total assets under management as of the end of January were $1.18 trillion, up $39 billion or 3.4 per cent from $1.141 trillion in December and up $168.3 billion or 16.6 per cent since January 2014, IFFIC said in its monthly report Thursday.
Net sales of balanced funds in January totalled $4.4 billion compared with net sales of $2.97 billion in December.
Bond fund net sales totalled $142.8 million compared with $3 million in December.
Equity fund net sales totalled $554.7 million in January compared with net redemptions of $874.2 million the previous month.
Specialty fund net sales totalled $416.4 million versus net redemptions of $83.6 million in December.

iShares shook up the ETF marketplace last March when it launched its Core family of low-cost ETFs in the major asset classes. This week iShares announced some new additions to its Core lineup, including two broad-market funds that go head-to-head with recently launched ETFs from Vanguard. Let’s take a peek at these compelling new offerings.
Blanket coverage of the US
First up is the iShares Core S&P U.S. Total Market (XUU), which provides exposure to the broad US stock market, including large, mid and small cap stocks.
This is iShares’ answer to the Vanguard U.S. Total Market (VUN), and it comes in five basis points cheaper, with a management fee of just 0.10%. However, the coverage is not quite as complete: VUN holds more than 3,800 stocks, compared with 1,500 for XUU. Although XUU’s benchmark is the S&P Total Market Index (which includes almost 3,900 companies) the fund actually holds three US-listed ETFs that make up the S&P Composite 1500 Index…
