Japan growth in Oct-Dec quarter revised down to 1.5 pct, but still affirms end to recession
– canadianbusiness.com
TOKYO – Japan economy escaped recession but grew less than earlier estimated as demand and wages remained weak, the government said Monday.
The world’s third-largest economy is still recovering from the blow to consumer and business spending from a sales tax hike on April 1, 2014. Purchases plunged after surging to beat that increase.
The revision puts inflation-adjusted growth for the year flat at exactly 0.0 per cent, compared with 1.6 per cent in 2013 and 1.8 per cent in 2012.
The government earlier reported that the economy grew at a 2.2 per cent annual rate in the final quarter of 2014 after contracting 6.4 per cent in April-June and 2.6 per cent in July-September.
Monday’s revision reflects downward inventory adjustments, lower private demand and flat-lining corporate and residential investment. It also showed a slight drop in incomes.
More recent data have shown a recovery in exports and increased orders of machinery — vital drivers for growth, and both the government and central bank say the economy is still in the midst of a moderate recovery…

Asian stocks fall after strong US jobs data sparks concern Fed might move up rate rise
– canadianbusiness.com
BEIJING, China – Asian stock markets fell Monday after strong U.S. jobs data increased chances that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates sooner.
KEEPING SCORE: The Shanghai Composite Index lost 1.1 per cent to 3,206.31 and Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 shed 0.7 per cent to 18,828.94. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng lost 0.7 per cent to 24,000.70 and Seoul’s Kospi declined 0.5 per cent to 2,002.00. Sydney, Singapore, New Zealand and Taiwan also fell. On Friday, the prospect of higher interest rates sent U.S. stocks tumbling.
JOBS JUMP: Strong U.S. employment growth in February was good news for workers but alarmed investors who worried a rate hike, previously not expected until as late as October, might happen as early as June. The Fed has held interest rates close to zero for more than six years to stimulate growth following the 2008 global crisis. But Friday’s announcement that employers added 295,000 jobs last month, which was far above expectations of about 235,000, fueled expectations unemployment would fall further and inflation might pick up…
