I receive a number of emails every month about my approach to saving and investing.  I’ll be the first person to acknowledge my investment strategies are not perfect but I feel, over time, the plan is good and the plan is working for us.  Here are some recent questions I received and my answers to them.
I recently read you want to have more “core” for your “explore”.  What does this mean?
You are probably referring to this post where I discussed my favourite equity Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs).  For us more “core” means a higher percentage of indexed ETFs in our registered accounts and relying less on dividend paying stocks in those accounts going forward.  Given I have no idea what the future holds I think my best bet for a successful financial future is consistent saving, a broad diversification in stocks, and keeping my investment costs super low. That means keeping the stocks I own for passive income but also making contributions into indexed ETFs for total equity market returns…

Toronto is facing a ticking traffic time bomb. Is it too late to fix it?Traffic congestion on the Gardiner Expressway
Vancouver is a city that got a lot right in its planning, as if its founders played Sim City by Jane Jacobs’s rules. It’s surrounded by green spaces, has a walkable downtown that encourages a fit citizenry, and its residents have an inexplicable, internally driven zeal for recycling. Sure, it’s not perfect—the city is still divided by strips of grinding poverty—but credit where credit is due: it’s got a lot of urban-planning factors figured out. But just like so many burgeoning megacities, it is hardly known for its quick, smooth commutes.
That’s why when the Winter Olympics came to town, it spurred a decade of significant transit investment, including a whole new rapid transit line that opened in 2009, which  connected downtown Vancouver to Richmond, as well as the airport. And rightly so: The 2010 Winter Olympics, according to reports, brought in 650,000 tourists from around the world and billions in related dollars; the city needed infrastructure investment to support the crush of people coming…

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – A 2012 tip led investigators to look into whether millionaire real estate heir Robert Durst played a role in the 1971 disappearance and presumed death of a Middlebury College freshman, police said Tuesday.
The tip was not connected with the producers of the HBO show “The Jinx,” which focuses on the life of Durst, who’s facing murder charges in the 2000 death of a woman in Los Angeles, Middlebury police Chief Thomas Hanley said.
Investigators, until they received that tip, were unaware Durst had been running a health food store where the student had shopped in the college town about 30 miles south of Burlington, Hanley said. He declined to describe Durst as a suspect in the disappearance of Lynne Schulze, who was from Simsbury, Connecticut.
“He is a person that had some proximate connection with a person that is missing here,” Hanley said Tuesday. “With some of the other background that we’re discovering on this person we’re very interested to find out what that connection is and how far we can go with that connection…

CANBERRA, Australia – Australia’s prime minister says he supports the proposed development of a Chinese-led Asian regional bank as long as it is transparent and was not run by a single country.
The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, expected to be establish by the end of 2015, has raised concerns in Washington that it will compete with established international lenders such as the World Bank.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott told reporters on Wednesday that Australia is “certainly well and truly disposed to joining something which is in fact a genuinely multilateral institution with transparent governance, with clear accountability and with major decisions made by the board.”
The Australian newspaper reports that Australia is expected join the Chinese proposed bank as early as this week.
