G-20 chief says worst may be over but development of global economy is weak and uneven
– canadianbusiness.com
WASHINGTON – The current head of the Group of 20 wealthy and emerging nations says governments need to do more to jolt the global economy out of the rut it fell into after the 2008 financial crisis.
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan, who is responsible for his country’s economy, said Thursday the worst may be over but recent economic developments are not yet satisfactory.
Speaking ahead of the G-20 meeting in Washington Friday, he said there are bright spots in some countries but growth is weak, imbalanced and uneven.
He said G-20 countries must do more to carry out commitments made last year in Australia to jumpstart growth including investing in infrastructure and boosting trade.
Babacan also said the G-20 needs to involve low income developing countries more in its deliberations.

Apple Watch delays findependence
– moneysense.ca
The true price of Apple Watch is steeper than you might think. (George Pimentel/Getty Images)MoneySense Editor-at-large and affable technophile Jonathan Chevreau happily announced on Twitter last weekend that he pre-ordered an Apple Watch. Getting a new gadget can be fun and I hope he’ll enjoy the device despite the mixed reviews it’s been getting.
For my part, I don’t want one. I generally avoid novel electronic devices, which makes me a late adopter. I’d much rather give the technical wizards time to work out the kinks in a new device and then buy a more refined product when the features are better and the prices are lower.
Given the current prices—and in my view limited usefulness—of the Apple Watch, I couldn’t help but wonder how many days of financial independence, or as Chevreau refers to it “findependence,” a young person would have to give up to buy one.
To make things easy, let’s focus in on the case of a 20-year old who earns $30,000 per year (after taxes) and would like to retire on the same amount of income, in inflation-adjusted terms, at 55…
Goldman Sachs’ earnings jump as investment banking unit has its best quarter since 2007
– canadianbusiness.com
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Goldman Sachs posted a big jump in first-quarter net income Thursday as its investment banking unit logged its best quarter since the financial crisis. Higher fees from trading bonds and currencies also helped.
DOLLARS FROM DEALS: Goldman is benefiting from an upswing in company deals in the U.S., driven by higher business confidence and low interest rates. Goldman said revenue from its investment banking unit was the highest it’s been in a single quarter since 2007.
TRADING BOOST: Big moves in the bond and currency markets in the first quarter also boosted earnings at the bank. Because markets were volatile at the start of the year, traders placed more bets to try and profit from those price swings. More trading activity means more commissions for banks and brokers.
THE NUMBERS: The bank earned $2.75 billion, or $5.94 a share, in the first three months of the year. That compares with $1.95 billion, or $4.02, in the same period a year earlier. Revenue rose to $10…
