SAN FRANCISCO – In her quest for the Republican presidential nomination, former tech CEO Carly Fiorina boasts about her experience running Silicon Valley computer-maker Hewlett-Packard.
What Fiorina’s campaign literature doesn’t highlight is that she was fired from that job in 2005, after a stormy tenure.
Fiorina has blamed her ouster on a sudden showdown with HP directors, but most of her six years as CEO were contentious. She cut more than 30,000 jobs and undertook a massive merger with rival Compaq, which sparked a messy battle with the families of HP’s founders.
The company missed some key financial targets and, from Fiorina’s hiring to her firing, its stock price fell more than 50 per cent.
Fiorina says in her defence that when you challenge the status quo you make enemies.

TORONTO – A Canadian executive with a U.S. financial services company has been identified as one of seven people killed in an Amtrak train derailment in Philadelphia.
Wells Fargo said Wednesday that Abid Gilani, a senior vice-president at the company, was among the victims of Tuesday’s crash, which also left more than 200 people injured.
“It is with great sadness that Wells Fargo confirms that Abid Gilani, a valued member of our Commercial Real Estate division, has passed away,” the company said in a statement.
“Our hearts go out to all those impacted by this tragedy.”
A company spokeswoman said Gilani was a married father of two who split his time between Washington and New York.
Gilani’s wife told reporters in Rockville, Md., that her husband was a “dear person” and “a kind family man.”
“We have suffered a tremendous loss today,” Diane Gilani said Wednesday. “He’ll be sorely missed … he was really a wonderful person…

Message from Riyadh: we’re winning
Today, a Saudi official says the country’s strategies are working: cutting out their rivals and giving them a bigger share of an increasing global barrel. But the IEA isn’t convinced they’re seeing the whole picture.
It’s another day of declining bond and share prices, and European indexes are falling so far this morning. The Greek situation isn’t helping: the government may have managed its debt payment to the IMF earlier this week (via more emergency debt), but there is still no concrete sign of progress in negotiations. The latest development is support from the German finance minister for a Greek referendum on membership in the euro.
In the U.S., retail sales numbers released yesterday for last month were flat – coming under expectations and underlining predictions that a U.S. rate hike could be pushed back still further. The greenback fell one per cent on a basket of currencies on the news, with Asian currencies gaining in response this morning.
The TSX/S&P Composite Index was down yesterday by another 60 points, falling to a six-week low, while the loonie edged down to 82…
