Anti-terror bill increases risk of tax leaks, experts say

Critics denounced the passing of the Anti-Terrorism Act in the House of Commons last week, saying the legislation will impede on Canadians’ freedom of expression and religion. With all the uproar, a key change in the Income Tax Act went largely unnoticed.
Under Bill C-51, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has been given permission to share your income tax filings with 13 additional government agencies.
Experts say this could render your personal financial information less secure than it already is in today’s electronic age.
Until now, the CRA has only had permission to share this information with three other agencies (CSIS, RCMP and FINTRAC) and only under very specific conditions. That list has grown to 16 in total and now includes Canada Border Services, the Canadian Armed Forces and Citizenship and Immigration among others.
The more people that have access to taxpayer information under Bill C-51, the higher the risk of leaks, hacks and other foul play, according to Avner Levin, the director of Ryerson University’s Privacy Institute…

U.S. stock indexes closed mostly higher Friday, pushing the Standard & Poor’s 500 index its second straight record close. Major indexes wavered between small gains and losses through much of the day as investors weighed new economic data and corporate earnings news.
On Friday:
The Dow rose 20.32 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 18,272.56.
The S&P 500 index gained 1.63 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 2,122.73.
The Nasdaq composite fell 2.50 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 5,048.29.
For the week:
The Dow is up 81.45 points, or 0.5 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 6.63 points, or 0.3 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 44.74 points, or 0.9 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 449.49 points, or 2.5 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 63.83 points, or 3.1 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 312.24 points, or 6.6 per cent.

TORONTO – The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board is growing its German real estate platform by investing 394 million euros (C$542 million) for a 46.1 per cent interest in German shopping centre operator mfi AG.
The CPPIB, the investment arm of the Canada Pension Plan, said that under its deal with joint venture partner Unibail-Rodamco, it will also invest an additional 366 million euros (C$503 million) in support of mfi’s financing strategies.
Unibail-Rodamco, the second-largest retail real estate investment trust in the world and the largest in Europe, is already a joint venture partner of the CPPIB through the CentrO Shopping Centre in Germany.
“This agreement allows CPPIB to build on our existing relationship with Unibail-Rodamco,” Andrea Orlandi, CPPIB managing director and head of Real Estate Investments Europe, said in a statement announcing the deal.
