MADRID – Credit ratings agency Moody’s says it has raised its outlook for Spain’s banks to positive, scrapping the negative rating it had held for seven years.
The agency said in a statement Thursday that the upgrade reflected its estimation of bank credit worthiness over the next 12-18 months, adding that Spain’s “robust economic recovery” was strengthening the country’s financial institutions.
Spain, European Union’s fifth-largest economy, was hit hard by the financial crisis and only emerged from a double-dip recession at the end of 2013.
The economy has expanded for the past seven quarters and is among the fastest-growing in the EU, with a forecast 3.1 per cent rate this year.
Moody’s Investor Services’ sovereign debt rating for Spain is Baa2 with a positive outlook.

TORONTO – An Ontario public-sector pension fund manager has agreed to buy Ohio-based Kenan Advantage Group, which operates a trucking network that delivers fuel, chemicals and liquid food to about 2,000 customers throughout North America.
OMERS Private Equity didn’t disclose how much it will pay to acquire KAG from Goldman Sachs Capital Partners and Centerbridge Partners.
It said Kenan Advantage has a good management team and long-term growth prospects that fit the investment strategy of the Ontario Municiple Employee Retirement System, which has about $72 billion of assets under management.
Kenan currently delivers fuel throughout the continental United States and in Mexico. In Canada, it has locations in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Saskatcewan and Northwest Territories.
The transaction is expected to close in this year’s third quarter.

Perfect advisor for your financial planning needsPicking the perfect advisor (Illustration by The Project Twins)
The word “frustrating” best describes Todd Wilson’s recent experience seeking information about mutual fund investments at his bank’s local branch. Even after talking with four different staffers, he still hadn’t received the help he needed. The problem? “There was no advice,” says the Edmonton-based engineer (whose name we’ve changed to protect his privacy). Wilson was hoping to get knowledgeable second opinions on his mutual fund preferences and to hear the relative merits of investing in TFSAs vs RRSPs. But instead, he says, “their attitude was, ‘If you want to invest, let me know and I’ll do the transaction for you.’”
Wilson’s discontentment is well justified. Simply put, there’s a lot more to a proper investment process than merely picking investments. Your advisor needs to first thoroughly understand your financial circumstances, and should be someone you can turn to for sound advice at all times…
