Getting married? Better update your financial plan(Getty Images / Tom Merton)
You’ve talked about old girlfriends and boyfriends. You’ve talked about whether you want children. You’ve talked about your mothers.
Now financial advisers say a discussion about money should be high on your to-do list before tying the knot this summer.
Sophie Salcito, an investment adviser with Vancity in North Vancouver, B.C., says couples should make a full disclosure to one another about what they own and what they owe in order to avoid any unpleasant surprises after the big day.
“Sometimes people don’t feel comfortable talking about that, but I think it makes for a better start to the relationship going forward if each picture is clearly laid out,” she said.
A failure to disclose all of your debts could make for an awkward discussion when it reaches credit check time for a mortgage and one person’s score threatens to derail the loan.
If you’re already living with your spouse-to-be, you may have already tackled such thorny financial issues…

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia – A top Russian official has declined to say whether his country is going to lend money to Greece, ahead of a meeting between the Greek and Russian leaders on Friday.
Greece is at an impasse in talks with its creditors to get more loans. Without the aid, it could default on a debt repayment of 1.6 billion euros ($1.8 billion) on June 30.
While his government is locked in those talks, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is travelling to Russia, his second visit since April, to meet President Vladimir Putin. Tsipras’ visit has given rise to speculation that the Greeks could be seeking Russian loans.
Tsipras is travelling with four cabinet ministers, arrived Thursday and is due to stay in St. Petersburg until late Friday, when he will meet Putin.
Asked by The Associated Press whether Russia is going to offer Greece money, Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich said he “cannot comment on specific decisions.”
The Greek economy has also been hit by Russia’s EU food imports ban, depriving it of millions of euros in agricultural exports, and although the Kremlin has indicated it could relax the restrictions on Greece, there has been no decision to do so…

Duffy’s trial adjourns until August. Next up: Nigel WrightMark Grenon and Donald Bayne Voir Dire are shown at suspended Senator Mike Duffy’s trial in Ottawa on Thursday, June 17, 2015 in this artist’s sketch. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Greg Banning
For Donald Bayne, it was like trying to win an argument with Rain Man about how many toothpicks had just spilled across the floor.
Dustin Hoffman was going to win every time.
Bayne, the criminal defence lawyer representing Mike Duffy, spent the day in Courtroom 33 grappling with Mark Grenon, a federal government forensic accountant retained by the RCMP for Project Amble, a probe of three senators—Duffy, Patrick Brazeau and Mac Harb.
Grenon had just spent the last two days in the witness box leading court through the ins and outs of Duffy’s financial life, including a $90,000 payment Nigel Wright made to the suspended senator in 2013.
