What semi-retirement is really like(VisualField/Getty Images)
Semi-retirement seems to me a natural half-way house between full employment and the classic “full-stop” retirement. Since stepping down from my full-time position at MoneySense more than a year ago, I have been attempting to experience just this phenomenon. Consider this column a progress report.
Entire books are devoted to this topic, as a web search will establish. Some I read in the past year include Bob Clyatt’s WorkLess, Live More: the Way to Semi-Retirement and, for a Canadian perspective, Ian Taylor’s Are you Ready for Semi-Retirement?
Clearly, some level of financial independence is a prerequisite to achieving and enjoying either full or semi-retirement. But there are degrees of financial independence, or what I call “findependence.” You may have achieved a “Cadillac” level of findependence with an assured $10,000 a month coming in, which would make you a candidate for the traditional full-stop retirement if you were that way inclined…

Canada’s Top 10 best dividend stocks for 2015

(John Lehmann/Globe and Mail/CP)
Getting paid to wait is a favourite catchphrase of dividend investors, but no one said the wait had to be a long one. Anyone who invested in AirBoss of America Corp. after it appeared on our dividend screen a year ago would have happily discovered that. If you bought into the Newmarket, Ont., defence contractor at that time, you would have more than doubled your money.
For that matter, half of the companies that popped up on our dividend list last year posted double-digit gains. That powered our top 10 picks to an average total return of 21.3%, matching the previous year’s performance while handily beating the S&P/TSX composite. What makes this return even more impressive is that half of the 2014 picks only had modest dividend yields, below 4%. This year, just two of the 10 dividend companies we list here have yields that low, which should reinforce the notion that there is more to picking dividend stocks than seeking out the company with the highest yield…

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Supermarket operator Albertsons Companies Inc., the No. 2 U.S. supermarket company whose brands also include Safeway, has filed for an initial public offering of stock, according to a filing Wednesday.
The Boise, Idaho-based company did not say how many shares it would offer, what they would cost or where those shares would trade. It said it expects to raise $100 million from the offering, though that figure is only an estimate used to calculate a filing fee. Proceeds from the offering will be used to repay debt and for general expenses.
Albertsons closed its $8 billion buyout of Safeway in January, drastically increasing the company’s size. It now operates 2,205 stores in 33 states under 18 names. Safeway locations make up 1,247 of those stores. Other names under Safeway operations include Vons, Tom Thumb and Randalls.
The company also operates 456 Albertsons supermarkets in 16 states. Other retail banners include Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, Acme, United Supermarkets, Pavilions, and Star Markets…
