How I used to sabotage my portfolio

Learn, save, invest and prosper by subscribing to My Own Advisor.
I spend a lot of time on My Own Advisor sharing what’s working in my financial plan and how incremental money management changes are moving us towards financial freedom every month.
As part of our plan we make monthly savings automatic, we invest in dividend paying stocks and indexed products for the long-term, and we diligently kill off mortgage debt using lump sum payments every month. We figure with this plan we should be financially free in less than 15 years.
On this seemingly blissful journey however the current road has paved over many financial mistakes.
Thinking about mistakes and failing to make changes from them always reminds me of this quote:
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results – Albert Einstein
By learning lessons and making some changes hopefully we experience major financial mistakes only once. To help you avoid some of the money management mishaps I’ve made over the years today’s post highlights two ways I used to sabotage my portfolio – but not anymore…

Regulatory Rollback Is Wrong for Financial Markets

Complaints about illiquidity are prompting talk about reforms that are simplistic and even dangerous.Poilievre flogs enhanced child care benefit as boost to the economy
– canadianbusiness.com
OTTAWA – Employment Minister Pierre Poilievre is touting the Conservative government’s enhanced child care benefit as boost for the economy while warning that Canadians should take heed of offshore financial chaos.
He used an event on Sunday at an Ottawa-based department store chain to flog the benefits of the lump sum payment, which will be paid out on July 20. The new benefit cheques are retroactive to Jan. 1 and provide a pre-election cash bump for families with children under 18.
With parents and young children, as well as aspiring Conservative candidates as his backdrop, Poilievre said the cash will prompt a welcome boost of consumer spending in the economy at a time of uncertainty, which includes the bankruptcy of Greece and the meltdown of the Chinese stock market.
Although, when asked, if it could be considered economic stimulus, he seemed reluctant to directly characterize it that way.
“This $3 billion injection into the mailboxes and bank accounts of Canadians comes at a perfect time to support not only our families, but our retailers, as they generate thousands of jobs for Canadians,” he said…

China accuses trading firms of manipulating stocks, violating trading rules in market slide
– canadianbusiness.com
BEIJING, China – Chinese authorities say some securities firms manipulated share prices and allowed improper trading during the country’s stock price plunge.
The announcements appeared to be part of efforts by the ruling Communist Party to deflect blame for the market plunge, which saw China’s stock benchmark fall more than 30 per cent over the past month.
Stocks have rebounded slightly following drastic official measures including a pledge by brokerages and government pension funds to buy stocks.
A police ministry statement said investigators found evidence that unspecified trading companies illegally manipulated securities and futures exchanges.
Separately, the securities regulator accused unspecified companies of violating market rules by allowing stock trading through accounts with fictitious names and other improper behaviour. It told brokers to tighten up oversight of accounts.
