TORONTO – Shares in mortgage lender Home Capital Group Inc. (TSX:HCG) were up more than 10 per cent a day after it said it has suspended its relationships with 45 mortgage brokers over allegations they falsified information about borrowers’ incomes.
The stock, which has been beat down in recent weeks, was up $3.54 or 12.5 per cent at $31.94 in trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Thursday morning.
Out of the 45 brokers that the company has cut ties with, 18 were independent brokers while the remainder came from two separate brokerages.
Home Capital provided details about the suspensions and its investigation in a news release after markets closed Wednesday.
The Ontario Securities Commission had requested the information be released.
The company says it is actively monitoring the mortgages in question and that it is unlikely the loans will result in credit losses.
Home Capital says it launched the investigation after it received a tip from an external source.
The suspensions occurred between September 2014 and March 2015…

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Stocks are edging lower as investors respond to some disappointing results from U.S. companies.
Procter & Gamble slid 3 per cent in midday trading Thursday after reporting that its sales fell for the sixth straight quarter.
Facebook declined 3 per cent after reporting late Wednesday that its expenses soared 82 per cent, cutting into earnings.
Whole Foods plunged 11 per cent. Its sales growth slowed sharply after New York City officials found it was overcharging customers.
The Dow Jones industrial average was down 22 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 17,729.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index gave up three points, or 0.1 per cent, to 2,105. The Nasdaq composite fell a point to 5,110.
Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.27 per cent.

TORONTO – Shares of Spin Master Corp. (TSX:TOY) moved higher on Thursday as the toymaker behind Zoomer robot dogs and remote-controlled Air Hogs debuted as a public company.
The Toronto-based firm, which made its initial public offering at $18 per share, traded 31 cents higher on the Toronto Stock Exchange near midday.
Earlier in the session, Spin Master shares briefly went as high as $18.64.
Spin Master manufactures a range of toys including Bakugan Battle Brawlers and board games like Moustache Smash and Shark Mania.
It employs more than 850 people around the world.
The company has been on an acquisition tear in recent months and raised $220 million through the IPO.
Last month, Spin Master bought Cardinal Industries, one of the oldest privately held toy companies in the United States, for an undisclosed price.
Next year, the company will distribute a new line of Teletubbies toys to coincide with a reboot of the franchise by Halifax-based DHX Media (TSX:DHX).
Spin Master was started on $10,000 by three college friends — Ronnen Harary, Anton Rabie and Ben Varadi — in 1994, and has grown into an international toymaker…
