Understanding Risk In Commercial Real Estate Investing May 15th

Q&A: How Southeast Asian economic community could change up-and-coming region
– canadianbusiness.com
BANGKOK – The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which on Saturday marks 48 years since its establishment, aims to establish an economic community known as the AEC by the end of this year. Proponents say the ultimate goal is to allow free trade, investment and movement of workers between the 10 nations that make up the grouping. But progress toward a borderless economy in a region that brings together democracies and dictatorships along with rich and poor nations is likely to be slow.

Is the AEC the new EU?
From a distance, Southeast Asia’s fledgling economic community resembles the early stages of the European Union, but at its core it’s a totally different animal. There are no plans for a common currency, central bank and regional parliament or to abolish borders within the region. However, policymakers could learn lessons from the EU experience where the movement of people from Eastern Europe to countries such as the U.K. has caused tensions. “To do it successfully, countries need to know how many people are going to come,” said Professor of Business Chris Wright, an expert in EU labour migration at the University of Sydney Australia…

Steady US job gains likely foretell a new era: Higher rates
WASHINGTON (AP) — A new era of higher rates on home and car loans, steeper borrowing costs for businesses and the government — maybe even a bit more return for savers — is about to arrive.
That, at least, is the word from most economists. After another solid U.S. jobs report Friday, they say the Federal Reserve seems all but sure to raise its short-term interest rate next month after keeping it pinned near zero for nearly seven years.

Even with banks open, Greek firms paralyzed by restrictions
THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) — Panagiotis Papadopoulos, the owner of a Greek company that builds and exports glass products like shower cabins, has been waiting three weeks to pay a supplier in Bulgaria.
It’s not that he doesn’t have the 45,000 euros ($49,000) or doesn’t want to pay. It’s that he first needs the approval of a committee run by the finance ministry in Athens.
Any business that wants to pay a foreign supplier needs this approval because the government is worried about money flowing out of the country due to its financial crisis…

Steady US job gains likely foretell a new era: Higher loan rates for consumers and businesses

It would be the Fed’s first rate hike since 2006. And it would end the aggressive campaign the central bank began after the 2008 financial crisis to save a teetering banking system and energize an ailing economy. While it could take months, the Fed’s moves should eventually drive up interest rates for mortgages, auto loans and other consumer and business borrowing.
