NB Power records $15M net loss in first quarter, pays down $16M in debt

FREDERICTON – NB Power says a net loss of $15 million during the first quarter was due in part to an unplanned outage at the Point Lepreau nuclear generating station.
The utility says despite the net loss, they were able to pay down $16 million in debt and anticipate positive earnings this year.
The Crown corporation says expenses increased $27 million during the first quarter because of the unplanned outage.
The company says its overall revenue was up by $12 million, due to a two per cent rate increase in October 2014 and an increase of out-of-province sales.
The Point Lepreau nuclear generating station was shut down for about a month this spring due to problems with a fuelling machine and heat transport system.
The 660 megawatt generating station produces enough electricity to power more than 333,000 homes.

Fed Vice Chair Fischer leaves door open for a Sept. rate hike, saying inflation likely to rise

WASHINGTON – Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer left the door open Saturday for a Fed rate increase in September, saying the factors that have kept inflation below the central bank’s target level have likely begun to fade.
Fischer said there’s “good reason to believe that inflation will move higher as the forces holding down inflation dissipate further.” He said, for example, that some effects of a stronger dollar and a plunge in oil prices — key factors in holding down inflation — have already started to diminish.
The vice chairman’s remarks came in a speech at an annual economic conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Investors have been trying to determine whether the Fed might still be on course to raise rates after its Sept. 16-17 meeting given the recent turbulence in financial markets and worries about China’s economy, which had raised doubts. In addition, inflation has remained persistently below the Fed’s 2 per cent target rate…

Berkshire Hathaway builds stake worth nearly $4.5 billion in refiner oil Phillips 66

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett’s company has amassed a stake worth nearly $4.5 billion in Phillips 66 more than a year after trading a chunk of its holding in the oil refiner for a chemical business investment.
A regulatory filing says Berkshire Hathaway Inc. has accumulated about 58 million shares, which amounts to more than 10 per cent of the Houston company’s stock.
In late 2013, the Omaha, Nebraska, company agreed to trade about $1.4 billion of its Phillips 66 stock for one of the refiner’s businesses that makes additives to help crude oil flow through pipelines.
Many investors watch Berkshire Hathaway filings closely because they like to copy Buffett’s moves given his successful record.
Phillips 66 shares closed at $77.23 Friday and have advanced about 8 per cent so far this year.
