Europe’s Altice extends aggressive US expansion with deal for Cablevision
– canadianbusiness.com
NEW YORK, N.Y. – European telecommunications and cable company Altice has agreed to buy New York cable operator Cablevision for $17.7 billion, including debt, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been formally announced. The announcement is expected before European financial markets open Thursday.
The move is part of Netherlands-based Altice’s aggressive expansion in the U.S. It announced a $9.1 billion deal for Suddenlink, a smaller cable company based in St. Louis, in May.
Shares of Cablevision Systems Corp. jumped 16 per cent to $33.12 in after-hours trading Wednesday.
U.S. cable companies have been in a merger frenzy over the past few years as people increasingly drop their TV packages and watch video online from competitors like Netflix, while cable companies’ costs for sports and other channels rise.

Trying to understand Canada’s fiscal state? Debt doesn’t lie

Though some politicians and economists would like you to think otherwise, GDP and budgets don’t tell the whole financial story
Until a few days ago, opinion was evenly split on whether the U.S. Federal Reserve would raise interest rates or sit on its hands. But now markets are so convinced there will be no move that it has created an even bigger obstacle to chair Janet Yellen opting for a hike.
5 things to watch for when the Federal Reserve ends its policy meeting on Thursday
– canadianbusiness.com
WASHINGTON – As it does once each quarter, the Federal Reserve will deliver a triple-dose of news Thursday afternoon — a policy statement, economic forecasts and a news conference by Chair Janet Yellen. But all eyes will be on one question:
Is the Fed raising interest rates from record lows?
Economists remain unsure, though the consensus seems to have shifted against the likelihood of an increase in the Fed’s benchmark short-term rate. Turbulence in financial markets, persistently low inflation and risks to the global economy from China’s sharp slowdown could lead the Fed to delay a hike until December or later.
Beyond that blockbuster decision, Fed watchers will be looking for other significant nuggets in the stream of information that will emerge Thursday.
Here are five things to watch for:
— INTEREST RATES
The biggest news, of course, is whether the Fed will announce in a statement at 2 p.m. Eastern time that it’s raising its target for the federal funds rate — the interest that banks charge each other on overnight loans…

French ride-sharing startup Blablacar raises $200 million, expanding globally
– canadianbusiness.com
PARIS – French startup Blablacar, which hooks up travellers who want to share a car for long-distance trips, says it has raised $200 million in investment as it seeks to ramp up global expansion.
Co-founder Nicolas Brusson tweeted the announcement Thursday, noting that it’s already active in 19 countries. The company is now reportedly worth more than $1 billion, drawing concerns about a bubble-like frenzy in the tech world.
Paris-based Blablacar is present in major European markets as well as Russia, India and Mexico. It’s focusing next on Brazil, other Latin American countries and Asia, CEO Frederic Mazzella was quoted in French business daily Les Echos as saying.
While car services such as Uber have clashed with French authorities, Blablacar has met less resistance. Its drivers don’t make profits on the rides.
