Housing boom a boon for Canada’s poorestFinally, some encouraging news for the little guy: while the latest StatsCan data shows the income gap between Canada’s poorest and richest widened slightly between 1999 and 2012, lower-income families benefited more from the housing boom. During that period, real estate’s share of total wealth rose to 57% from 46% for households in the bottom 20% income bracket, compared with just a six percentage point rise to 40% for those in the highest-earning quintile.

Stocks ended mostly lower after a volatile day as traders tried to figure out what was next for U.S. interest rates. The bumpy trading came after the Federal Reserve decided to keep interest rates low for now, citing weakness in the global economy and unsettled financial markets.
On Thursday:
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 65.21 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 16,674.74.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 5.11 points, or 0.3 per cent, to close at 1,990.20.
The Nasdaq composite rose 4.71 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 4,893.95.
For the week:
The Dow is up 241.65 points, or 1.5 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 29.15 points, or 1.5 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 71.61 points, or 1.5 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 1,148.33 points, or 6.4 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is down 68.70 points, or 3.3 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 157.89 points, or 3.3 per cent.
