How artificial intelligence is transforming financial risk management(Iker Ayestaran)
When an investment firm requested a search of documents related to Sino-Forest Corp., the Chinese forestry giant once listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange, a due diligence software engine dubbed The Brain came up with an article that asserted the company didn’t appear to own as much land as it claimed to. Unfortunately for Sino-Forest’s shareholders, this search took place years after the RCMP and Ontario Securities Commission accused the company of fraud in 2011. The article The Brain found, however, predated the investigation by several months. “Research analysts would have loved to have had that article years ago, but everyone missed it,” says Dan Adamson, one of The Brain’s developers.

Adamson, 40, is the president and CEO of DDIQ (Due Diligence Intelligence Quotient), an offshoot of Toronto artificial intelligence (AI) startup OutsideIQ focused on applying the technology to investment research…

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Microsemi, a maker of semiconductors, boosted its buyout offer for chipmaker PMC-Sierra again, two days after PMC-Sierra said it preferred a deal with rival Skyworks.
Microsemi Corp. is now offering a mix of cash and stock valued at about $12.05 for each share of PMC-Sierra, up from the $11.88 per share in cash and stock it offered late last month. It’s the second time Microsemi has boosted its offer.
The latest offer from Microsemi, based in Aliso Viejo, California, is worth about $2.4 billion.
On Monday, PMC-Sierra said an offer from Skyworks of $11.60 per share was a better deal because it would be paid in all cash.
Representatives for Sunnyvale, California-based PMC-Sierra Inc. and Woburn, Massachusetts-based Skyworks Solutions Inc. did not immediately respond to a request of comment Wednesday morning.

VANCOUVER — At least three investigations are underway in the case of an investment dealer and former Canadian Olympic rower who has gone missing from Victoria.
Investia Financial Services Inc. has launched a probe into the activities of Harold Backer, who is also the subject of two missing-persons investigations — in his hometown and in Washington state.
The Victoria Police Department has said Backer, 52, told his wife on Nov. 3 that he was going for a bike ride but failed to return home.
“Harold’s family needs to know that he is safe,” the department said in a statement asking for the public’s help in finding Backer.
Police in Port Angeles, Wash., said last week that an officer who viewed video from a street security camera on Nov. 3 noted a man fitting Backer’s description was aboard a ferry from Victoria, a 90-minute trip away.
Please help @vicpdcanada @PAPOLICE Help locate Harold Backer. #findingharoldbacker https://t.co/1zL6U3yvva pic.twitter…
