BlackBerry Q3 loss less than anticipated, revenue above estimates
– canadianbusiness.com
WATERLOO, Ont. – BlackBerry (TSX:BB) is reporting higher revenue and a smaller loss than analysts were expecting.
The smartphone company’s revenue was US$557 million, which is $64 million above the general estimate and up from US$548 million a year ago.
The company’s net loss was US$89 million or 17 cents per share under standard accounting rules. After adjustments, BlackBerry’s loss was US$15 million or three cents per share — far less than estimates.
Analysts projected that BlackBerry would report a loss of 14 cents per share and US$489 million of revenue for the quarter, according to Thomson Reuters.
Chief executive John Chen says the company saw higher revenue across all areas of its focus, including software, and it will increase spending on the launch of the newest BlackBerry smartphone — the first with an Android operating system.
Initial stock market reaction to the quarterly report was positive, with the pre-market price rising by eight per cent from Thursday’s close…

Female CFOs gain in pay, prevalence and prominence at US companies and they now out-earn men
– canadianbusiness.com
Women may be badly outnumbered in the top ranks of corporate America, but at least they aren’t underpaid.
Compensation for female chief financial officers at S&P 500 companies last year outpaced that of their male counterparts, according to an analysis by executive compensation firm Equilar and the Associated Press. It follows a similar trend seen with female CEOs in recent years.
The median pay for female CFOs last year rose nearly 11 per cent to $3.32 million. Male CFO pay rose 7 per cent, to $3.3 million. This follows several years of steady gains for both sexes.
The gains, for both men and women, are in part a result of the expansion of the CFO role to include far more responsibility and visibility.
“The CFO is no longer a bean counter,” said Josh Crist, managing director at executive search firm Crist Kolder Associates.
Companies and shareholders became more focused on financial security and regulation after the financial crisis, and corporate finance began to play a bigger role in company strategy, according to Gregg Passin, a compensation expert at consulting firm Mercer…
