CALGARY – After much anticipation Canada could see final approval of the first natural gas export projects on the West Coast this year.
Proponents behind some of the 20 proposed liquefied natural gas projects in B.C. say they should be in a position to make final investment decisions this year as environmental approvals, permits and First Nations support fall into place.
And while a supply glut has pushed down natural gas prices and reduced short-term prospects, experts say projects remain viable.
“These are long-term, multi-decade projects,” said Altacorp Capital analyst Mark Westby. “Current gas prices are only one factor.”
Spot prices for LNG have dropped by more than half in Asia over the past two years. In Japan, the world’s biggest buyer of LNG, prices have dropped from over US$18 per thousand cubic feet in March 2014 to around US$7.50 per thousand cubic feet last November.
Westby sees LNG Canada, a joint venture headed by Shell that is proposing a facility in Kitimat, and the Altagas-led Douglas Channel project also planned for Kitimat as developments most likely to proceed this year…

2015 December Dividend Income Update
Welcome to my final dividend income update for 2015.  For those of you new to these posts on my site, every month I discuss my approach to investing using Canadian dividend paying stocks and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), and how reinvesting the dividends and distributions paid from these holdings are helping us reach financial freedom.
For the year that was:

The S&P/TSX Composite Index ended the year down about 11%. The Canadian part of my portfolio was down almost as much since most of my individual holdings are the same companies held by many of the largest equity ETFs and mutual funds sold in Canada.
South of the Border, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was rather flat for the year and so was the U.S. side of my portfolio. Overall, not a great year for portfolio growth.

The income side was different however…
We hold some Canadian dividend stocks non-registered because we’ve been very fortunate to max out my TFSA and RRSP in recent years…

NEW YORK, N.Y. – StubHub, eBay’s ticket reselling subsidiary based in San Francisco, hired Scott Cutler as its new president in April. He was previously head of global listings at the New York Stock Exchange. Since joining StubHub, he’s worked to simplify its pricing and revamp its app to better compete in an increasingly mobile world. Here he discusses why he came to StubHub, what its users look like and how the company moved its service to mobile. Answers edited for clarity and length.
Q: Why the jump from the NYSE to StubHub?
A: I was hired to transform the (NYSE) brand and spent the next nine years rebuilding the platform. When I got there we had less than a 5 per cent market share in tech and when I left we had 30 per cent. … What excited me the most about (StubHub) was it was a marketplace. … It’s not the same situation as the NYSE, but the need to develop relationships with the ecosystem – and for us that ecosystem includes leagues, teams, content holders, artists, performers, live entertainment and then the broader technology community – where you can take our e-commerce platform and introduce mobile and social and global aspects to it…

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Tumult in China triggered the worst opening week for U.S. stocks in history, and this week investors could get plenty more to worry about.
Profits are expected to drop at U.S. companies.
Again.
Earnings for companies in the Standard and Poor’s 500 index are forecast to drop for the second straight quarter, a rare occurrence outside a recession. Despite a rebounding jobs market, the U.S. did not grow fast enough to boost profits, and once surging developing economies that helped lift foreign sales slowed dramatically.
All this would be worrisome enough at any time, but investors are particularly jittery now. U.S. stocks are expensive by some measures, even after slipping in 2015 and falling sharply in the first week of the year. That leaves little room for more disappointing news.
One widely respected gauge, the so-called Shiller earnings ratio, is flashing warning signs. Named after Nobel Prize winner Robert Shiller of Yale, the ratio compares the price of stocks to annual earnings averaged over 10 years…
