SEOUL, South Korea – South Korea said Wednesday that it would suspend operations at a joint industrial park with North Korea in response to the North’s recent rocket launch, the first time in the park’s decade of operation that Seoul has halted work there.
The move comes after North Korea on Sunday launched a long-range rocket considered by other countries to be a banned missile technology test.
South Korean Unification Minister Hong Yong-pyo said at a news conference that the suspension of operations at the industrial complex in the North Korean border city of Kaesong would stop the North from using hard currency earned there to develop nuclear and missile technology.
The park, which started operations in 2005, has provided 616 billion won ($560 million) of cash to North Korea, Hong said.
South Korea’s government will provide financial compensation to companies that operate at Kaesong, Hong said. It will begin pulling South Koreans from the park on Thursday.

SYDNEY – Australia’s former prime minister and two other politicians were gifted designer watches by a Chinese businessman — but initially kept them only because they thought the 40,000 Australian dollar ($28,000) timepieces were fake.
The Herald Sun newspaper reported Wednesday that former Prime Minister Tony Abbott and fellow Liberal party lawmakers Stuart Robert and Ian Macfarlane received the watches in 2013 when their party was in opposition. Macfarlane told the paper that a representative of China’s Li Guancheng Investment Group gave them the watches in a plastic bag during an informal dinner.
Macfarlane said they believed the watches were fake. Then last year a fellow lawmaker with a real Rolex pointed out the watch Macfarlane wore looked genuine. After realizing it was, Macfarlane said he, Abbott and Robert returned the watches.

WASHINGTON – Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen will address Congress on Wednesday at a time of deepening uncertainty about the Fed’s interest rate policies.
Since the Fed raised rates from record lows in December, the economic landscape has become clouded by falling stock markets, global weakness and sharply lower energy prices. Against that backdrop, lawmakers will likely want to question Yellen about the probable pace of further rate hikes and the Fed’s role in supporting the U.S. economy.
After testifying to the House Financial Services Committee on Wednesday, Yellen will address the Senate Banking Committee on Thursday.
Last week’s jobs report for January further complicated the likelihood and timetable of additional rate increases. It showed more pay for workers and rising confidence among job seekers, even though the pace of hiring slowed.
So are more Fed rate hikes coming soon?
There is less certainty now than when the Fed raised its target rate for overnight lending on Dec…
